System bootOrder not found in Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G-50UW

I have an Acer Aspire 5 A515-51G-50UW, i5-7200U, 8gb DDR4, 1TB HDD, which I bought more than 2 years back. I manually installed an M.2 WD 120gb ssd and moved the win10 OS there. I later dual booted my laptop with ubuntu using GRUB.
Yesterday my laptop wasn't able to boot, it showed "System bootOrder not found". I have tried a lot solutions available on the internet but nothing worked.

How do I fix this? I am ready to lose the ubuntu OS because it doesn't have anything important but the windows 10 one has some important stuff.

    What version is your BIOS?

Exactly when did you get the  "System bootOrder not found" message?

Also, do you have another PC that you can connect this problem drive there as a second hard drive?

    BIOS version is v1.21

I get that message about 3 min after I press the power button. The acer logo is still visible on the screen at this point.

If by problem drive you mean the ssd, then no. Also, do you think the problem is with the ssd?

    1) So, it is Insyde v1.21, right?

    2) So the laptop freezed at the Acer Logo for three minutes?

    3) I am not saying the problem is with the SSD. I am just thinking of the worst case and the data in the Windows partition is too important to lose, you may be able to read the data by putting the SSD into another working PC and have that PC reading data from this SSD.

    My personal experiences:

Had a good, working desktop with Win 10 Home.
Added another Win 10 Enterprise to the x16 slot via an adapter.
To my surprise the Enterprise version could not come up with proper drivers with some hardware.
Tried hard to find the drivers for the same machine.

Finally, booted to Win 10 Enterprise, and when updating drivers I had the Enterprise version reading drivers from the Win 10 Home drive one by one.

In case the worst happened, you can recover data this way.

    1) Yes.

    2) Yes. It freezed at the logo for 3 min and then showed the message in the top left corner and it restarted automatically, repeating the whole process. I had to force shut down by pressing the power button.

    3) Oh, I see.

Are you able to reach BIOS by tapping F2 when bootup?

Is so, can you attach phone photos of the BIOS, the boot tab in particular.

I see you have two Windows Boot Managers with your boot tab, believe the top one is your added SSD with both Windows and Linux partitions on it.

Has the Ubuntu ever worked or you have problems right after Ubuntu installation?

    Try these:

Secure boot set it to "Disable"

Hightlight the Boot Priority Order 2 ( The Windows Boot Manager without the WDC), press F6 to move it up in the priority list

Yes, I have grub installed since last year for school. Only since day before yesterday grub isn't showing up.

I have used ubuntu a lot of times and it worked perfectly fine.

Secure boot seems to be fixed, I can't change it.

Tried changing the boot priority but still can't boot :(

You said "Tried changing the boot priority but still can't boot", does it mean the drive without Linux is now at top of priority?

When your Linux was running fine, when you booted up to Windows, did you see the blue page "Choose an OS" for Windows OS on different drives?

Can you remember your Ubuntu installation procedure? That is, when you installed Ubuntu, did you create another 100 MB ESP partition ? At the last step, did you choose the boot loader to be written on the ESP partition of this Linux drive or the UEFI partition of the other drive that has the original Windows?

I think the UEFI file is corrupted.

One thing you can try is physically remove the drive with the Linux, hopefully will force to boot Windows from the drive without Linux.

Personally I prefer rolling release Manjaro Linux to Ubuntu and added it in a separate drive with separate ESP partition from the drive with Win 10 for my laptop with Insyde V1.02 BIOS. The boot loader written to the ESP partition of the Linux drive. Secure boot could not be changed initially at "Standard"in BIOS, but I was able to boot to Manjaro Linux by tapping F12 for Boot Menu at bootup, after entering the BIOS supervisor password. Somehow, secure boot become "Disabled" after Win 11 upgrade without my setting change.

Did GRUB ever work AFTER you installed the m.2?

The Windows Boot Manager without the WDC is now at the top.

Nope, when linux was working fine, if I selected windows in the grub menu, no further menus popped up. It directly booted windows.

I don't remember creating any separate partitions for bootloader. But if I did, it would be created in the ssd.

I should add that I formatted the HDD that came with the laptop. Everything is in the ssd.

Should I update or re-install BIOS, if that's possible.

Also, if everything else fails, is it possible that my laptop would work again if I completely format the laptop and install a single OS.

Yes, I installed grub few months after I installed the ssd. grub, linux and windows worked perfectly fine for over a year. Nothing changed before my laptop started showing the error.

    1) The original Windows on HDD is now on top of priority list, but still stuck at Acer logo for three minutes?

    2) Since you don't see Choose an OS blue screen, I think your Ubuntu bootloader is written to the UEFI partition of the original HDD, not the SSD. Later on you formatted the HDD, so this may be the problem source

    3) Latest BIOS for your laptop is V2.02, don't think it is your problem source. You may want to update it later after the issue is sorted out.

    4) After you salvaged your data ( use it as second drive in a PC with working Windows), you can go to Microsoft to download the latest Windows to a flash drive with the Media Creation Tools. Later on boot to this flash drive and do a clean Windows installation. That will wipe your SSD clean and write a new UEFI file. Your laptop should be working fine as long as the boot problem is fixed. Looks like it is not hardware problem. Windows license embedded in the laptop motherboard.

Or you can hold down ALT and keep tapping F10 key at boot up until you see the Restore menu ( as long as the recovery partition not previously wiped out by formatting).

Troubleshoot>Reset This PC . Here you have the choice of resetting the laptop to factory condiotion or Keep My Files.

Before you reset the PC , you can try one more thing first.

    Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Startup Repair

or Startup Settings. Hopefully one of these two can repair problems that keep Windows from loading.

I doubt your case can be  repaired with these two things , but you can try it first before resetting the PC.

    (1) What happens when you temporarily disconnect the HDD and run on m.2 alone?
    (2) What happens when you temporarily disconnect the m.2 and run on HDD alone?
    (3) What happens when you set and save a BIOS supervisor password, then re-enter the BIOS with the password to try to change the boot order?

I think the magic words are  "moved the win10 OS". Unless the drive was cloned you do not get the hidden partition and files required for a UEFI boot (e.g. BOOTX64.efi). There is a way to make your disk boot, just Google "make UEFI drive bootable".

    1) It says:
"Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.
Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key
Then Select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media"

    2) Same Error as the original: "System bootOrder not found" on the acer logo

    3) Nothing happened. But this time, I was able to change the 'Secure boot' mode.

Did you get the exact same shell or message when you tried each drive by itself?
