Tried to install replacement touchpad in Nitro 5 AN515-54, can't get the laptop to recognize it.

The left click paddle under the touchpad broke on my AN515-54 after about 17 months, so I can hardly left click. Bought a replacement from eBay. It fits and looks the same cosmetically, but I've learned it's made by a different company, "ElanTech". The one that came with my laptop is from Synaptics. Downloaded and installed the Elantech drivers on the Acer website, nothing. Windows doesn't even recognize it, I don't have touchpad settings, nothing in device manager. Not under hidden devices. I reinstalled my old touchpad to make sure I didn't wreck the cable, and it indeed is recognized and back to partially working. Any ideas? Do I need the Synaptics for this model?
