Hi everyone, I have Acer A315-51 (NX.GNPSI.008) laptop with i3 7th Gen 7130U.

Purchased it from Flipkart India - acer Aspire 3 Core i3 7th Gen - (4 GB/500 GB HDD/Linux) A315-51 Laptop Rs.28990 Price in India - Buy acer Aspire 3 Core i3 7th Gen - (4 GB/500 GB HDD/Linux) A315-51 Laptop Obsidian Black Online - acer : Flipkart.com

I know this laptop have dedicated m.2 slot, but I want to know if it supports nvme or only sata is supported. I wanted to upgrade the RAM + SSD.

Also, Specs says I can upgrade ram upto 12GB. That means 4(preinstalled)+8GB, right?

I belive it's sata only not nvme.: Note looks like I was wrong! Egydio corrects me below :)

And if your model comes with soldered ram yup, but some come with 4gb as a stick so it's worth checking!
  • This model supports optane memory. So it will support nvme too! But you need to update the bios:

here is the pcie bus info i found in hwinfo app after reading some other threads.

My laptop support pcie v3, with 4x max bandwidth. this means my system will be able to use full speed of nvme like 1800-2200mbps?

On amazon india im able to purchase same size nvme for only 10-12 extra dollars (800inr), should go for the nvme? i use photoshop and illustrator on my laptop. or msata ssd will be more than enough?
  • As I said earlier, this model accepts nvme.

Hi, I have an Aspire A315-51-356P with i3 6006u, from 2017 and bios is same v1.03 out of the box, can u please tell whether nvme will be supported in the m2 slot? I am planning to use crucial p1 nvme if supported. You can please check hwinfo and other images below. If nvme not support then I'll use sata m.2.
And also the bios has already option to enable optane support, although I've never updated my bios ever since 4 years.
Can u please tell whether bios update required or not, I'm not familiar with bios updation etc.

Thank you so much for your help in advance.

Hi @tvffakeid , can you please tell me whether NVMe was installed successfully on your system? I have a very similar model to yours, only difference is that mine has i3-6006u instead of i3-7130u. (A315-51)

I advise updating the bios, before installing the ssd.

I consider the crucial p1 nvme ( 2,000 MB/s read, kind of close to the speed of a x2 drive) a mid-range to low end NVMe SSD. From the picture you provided, you can use x4 NVMe SSD ( 3,400 MB/s read) high end drives.

There are so many high end drives around selling at a price lower than this
    crucial p1 nvme.

@ttttt You are right mate, but my laptop itself is a very low end with a low end cpu 6006u i3, so spending much on this doesn't make a huge benefit, I don't exactly intend to spend much on this system, I'll only install os and apps on this ssd and use the old hdd as a secondary drive for storage.
Basically buying this ssd to extend longevity of my ageing system for ~2 or more years. I'm a light user.

Anyways, if you have nvme ssd buying suggestions other than p1 in that same low price range, I'll be happy to hear them. From what I've found, most nvmes in that range are all qlc based and are quite similar.

    Ps. I'm getting a 500gb p1 at 52$ (INR 3900)

Just because I have checked the price of this P1 NVMe drive from Amazon and found that the price is not attractive at all and running slower, so I made such comments.

From the HWINFO64 page you provided, I could see the maximum link width is 4X, this is very good for a low end i3-6006u PC, and will get maximum benefits with a fast NVMe SSD. Surprised to see a low end 6th gen Intel CPU PC already have x4 capability. You will find out this NVME SSD will give a big boost in performance. I have recently repaired an 8th generation Intel CPU PC for a friend and this PC could only use 2X (1,700 MB/s) NVMe SSD capability.

For low price selection, I am using a Silicon Power A80 drive as the primary on one of my desktops.
SK Hynix Gold P31, WD SN 750 Black, SS 970 EVO, SS 970 EVO Pro, SS 980...etc. are also good drives. I have most of them and happy about all. You may want to compare the price for same capacity model with this P1 NVMe that you have in mind.

When you retire your i3-6006u PC, and if the NVMe SSD still functioning well, you can take it out and put it in an adapter and use it as an external drive to your future new PC through either USB Type-C or USB 3.0 port, no waste at all.

@ttttt I guess you're right, but in India, p1, p2, sn550, and SP A60 ( not A80) are being offered at similar price range on amazon.in (at Rs 4000 approx). And all of them are now qlc based. The ones you're mentioning are all Rs 1500-3000 higher than the ones above, and since I had to buy a battery as well alongwith this ssd for this laptop, i couldn't go beyond my budget being a student.

Therefore I went ahead with p1 and it worked, it is not the most performing drive but here in india its at par with all other drives in the same range.

Only good performing tlc nvme in india i found in the same range as p1 was the kioxia tlc based nvme at Rs 4200. But kioxia has almost no service in india so there'll be no replacement if the drive fails.

But thanks for your suggestions. I will keep all these in mind while buying my next ssd, probably with my next laptop which I'll get after retiring this one.

sorry for the late reply, but yeah nvme ssd worked in my laptop too. I bought sp a60 256gb one for 2885 inr... i dont store much media, and have setup my hdd as the default download location for everything so im fine with 256gb one. ssd has made huge difference in performance.

switching between photoshop, browser, illustrator was smooth as *****.. but then my ram became bottleneck (i had 4gb only), illustrator crashed when working on huge hundred mb files... so i upgraded ram too, bought sk hynix 8gb dual rank stick for 1990 from flipkart. was scared a bit shopping from flipkart, there are many ram scam videos on yt, but thankfully i received working ram stick... it looked brand new, but the manfucturing date is of 2017 in cpu-z.. now I have 12gb dual channel ram + nvme ssd.

clean installed win11 and i can use all my programs simultaneously even with new android subsystem.

and btw sp a60 is tlc ssd, you said its qlc.

    @tvffakeid

So you are a happy user with your laptop now.

I guess the RAM stick manufactured in 2017 should not be a problem at all, as long as it was sealed new. That RAM stick should be still newer than tour laptop, right?
Got an 1 TB WD server drive last year, and the manufactured date was April 2015, old enough! The drive was sealed and Crystal Disk Info indicated it had zero hour used, so I was happy.

When @siddhant764 said the drives were qlc, I was puzzled. I know about TLC and 3DNand, never heard of QLC. My SP A60 ( not the A80, got both of them) is TLC for sure.

yeah thats my bad, i mistook a newer nvme from SP which is qlc based for A60.
