I just purchased an Acer Spin 311 CP311-3H-K3WL.

The current chromeOS version is 81.0.4044.127 (Official Build) (32-bit).

Can anyone tell me if this Acer chromebook will be updated to chromeOS ver 88 or higher?

Reason: I want to connect an XP-Pen tablet, (Deco Mini 7 Wireless), for drawing but XP-Pen states that it requires chromeOS 88.0.4324.109 or later.

Thank you all so much for any help with this.

I have successfully used the chromebook recovery utility to get to version 91....

I don't know if it will begin updating automatically now but at least it is up to date so far.

    Hi cgsjr,

    Check for updates yourself

    1. Turn on your Chromebook.
    2. Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi.
    3. At the bottom right, select the time.
    4. Select Settings .
    5. At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.
    6. Under "Google Chrome OS," you'll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.
    7. Select Check for updates.
    8. If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

I have already done that several time and, after going through an "Updating your device" process from 0% to 100%, the result is:

Your Chromebook is up to date
    Version 81.0.4044.127 (Official Build) (32-bit)

In other words the version number does NOT change and I have also shut down then restarted.

Since chromeOS is now at version 91, (is that right?):

I need to know if this system NOT updating means that it will never be updated.

I believe the issue is with the two different versions of the ChromeOS, 32bit and 64bit. You are running 32bit (which may be required by your CPU) and they stopped doing new 32bit builds. If you can upgrade to a 64bit build it should go ahead and do the rest of the upgrades for you. Then again, I could be all wrong. :)

    Hi cgsjr,

Try to Hard reset your Chromebook
    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold Refresh + tap Power .
    3. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh.

THANKS! I was alerted to a problem with chrome os version because the first thing I did was log in with my child's family link account, and play store did not update. I logged in with my own account and it did update only the play store, but I still had the same issue as you with auto update from 81.0.4044.127 in the form of 100% complete, no error but no version update either.

The first login experience with 91.x following recovery was totally different and clearly better-designed to include family link accounts, for instance I was offered to set up for a child and create, or log in an existing, child account (which must be a huge part of the market for this device). I didn't need to separately log in with my own account, only to authorise. Play store worked from the off. Time will tell if device update is seamless.

First Chromebook in our house and a poor user experience just because Acer ships it with an old version. I was technical enough not to be scared by recovery but how many would bother? If update doesn't work but play services is independent for a non family account, how many will even notice? But they won't get security benefits and/or will end up junking the device early.

The actual device seems impressive so far. Child has of course removed it from my grasp because they can now install and play their software! YouTube non kids has not yet authorised which is a minor pain...

Full YouTube and iPlayer and Netflix do not have a PEGI rating and therefore were being blocked by the child app content rating I had set. Not the Chromebook at fault but it is dumb that you can't allow parental guidance apps in family link. Worked around by allowing all apps but all subject to approval.

After using the recovery tool my chromebook is now automatically checking for updates and notifying me to restart if needed.

I have the exact same problem with the same model Acer Spin 311.  New machine, have used it about a week and it is stuck on Version 81.0.4044.127 (Official Build) (32-bit).   Powerwashing did not resolve problem.    I called Acer support and they said that different machines have different versions.  However it is obvious that this version is way behind.  I feel like using the Chromebook recovery tool is a bit extreme considering I've only had this machine a week.  I don't mind learning things, but what is a non-tech person supposed to do -- return it?
Thanks in advance for any ideas here!!?

Using the restore utility plugin is very easy.
When its finished you will have to completely setup your chromebook as you did when you first started it when new.

    If I recall correctly:

    Connect to the internet
    Install the plugin
    Run the plugin
Allow it to find the correct image file online
Insert your USB thumb drive when prompted, (it will be erased)
Restart when the utility finishes preparing the USB drive.
Wait for the chromebook chromeos to be installed.

    I didn't have any problems.

I would try that before returning but you will have to make that decision.

    Good luck.

I took your advice, dived in, and used the Chromebook Recovery Utility.  The Chromebook updated to a 92. version immediately after recovery!!!  Everything works correctly now too, before we were unable to use sites like Hulu.
I'm so glad to be done with this problem, BUT it felt very wrong to have to do this to a brand new, barely out of the box machine.   Oh well.
    THANK YOU!!!

Good for you on learning that new thing! However I totally agree this is a terrible user experience that should not be required. Acer support should be at least talking you through the recovery process, even though it isn't totally their fault because the update bug must be with google. I would prefer to see them send out usb keys with the recovery image on it, in lieu of a recall. It sounds though as if they don't know where the machines with problem version installed have ended up... Messy.
