Hello everyone!
My Laptop which is an Acer swift 3 SF314-55G sometimes won't turn on. What I mean by this is that when powering it on, sometimes it doesn't show the Acer logo and the screen stays black (or maybe greyish) but the power indicator(that blue light on the side) turns on showing that the laptop is turned on. First fix : I do this by pressing and holding the power button for 15 seconds and then releasing it, and then pressing it just once, after which it boots normally. The second fix : Recently I have noticed that shaking my display a little along the pivot also fix this but this time acer logo won't show up and it directly shows windows 10 login screen. This second fix doesn't work everytime.

Apart from this my laptop also has a flickering problem which I think is related to the above problem. Sometimes the screen starts flickering heavily and won't stop unless I shake the display along the pivot. I have observed same sort of flickering patterns during the second fix.

Earlier this used to happen like once or twice a week but now the frequency has increased and this is a daily happening which is bothering me a lot. Any Idea how to solve this issue?

My guess is there is actually two things going on. As egydiocoelho suggests the eDP cable may be either pulling away from it's socket at either end or may be developing internal cracks. That is typically the only reason we see changes to behavior when you move the screen, since the cable goes through the hinge area and is flexed each time you open or close the laptop. The other issue could be related to the battery in which case the battery rest suggested should clear it up, but can also be caused by a poorly written app or driver that doesn't 'play well with others'. When it gets a request from the system to go to sleep it doesn't do well at it, so can't wake back up, which gives the symptoms you are seeing. The long press on the power button forces a system power off which kills that task, allowing you to boot back up normally. You can test this by booting Windows in safe mode and trying to duplicate the behavior. If it stops happening then it's a non-Microsoft app or driver causing it.

    Hi suraj13,

    # Try to update the battery driver

    1. Hold windows key and hit letter X.
    2. Choose the device manager option.
    3. Go with the option battery.
    4. Under the title battery.
Update Battery Drivers in Windows EASILY - Driver Easy
    5. Right click on that option ----> Update all driver under the title battery.
    6. Choose "search automatically".

Check this T/S and post the result.

    Hi ! @Easwar
Sorry for the late response. I followed your steps and it says "Best Drivers are already Installed". The issues mentioned in the original post are still there.

I tried battery reset after which it didn't happened for a day or so. But after that it happened again. How do I boot in safe mode to figure this out? as it happens immediately after pressing the power button and the screen remains black. After which the PC shows no response to the inputs from keyboard (except the long press of power button).

@egydiocoelho I tried the battery reset but the issue is still there. I guess I have to get some help from a technician to do the thing with EDP cable.

    @billsey
Should I expect a "Click" sound from the laptop while resetting the battery with the paper clip ?
  • Yes, you will feel when the battery reset button is being pressed. Now when you connect an external hdmi monitor, does the image appear? Have you tried installing these drivers?
