Hello,

Yesterday and today my 4 year old predator helios 300 laptop screen flickered for a bit then goes completely black (laptop still on, just display not)

Disabling the gforce card drivers to use the onboard graphics instead resulted in no change to the flicker fest.  I then hooked laptop up to a seperate monitor, laptop screen started going iffy, but same display simultaniously on the monitor was alright.

Can I be sure the problem lies with the laptop screen then and is not the graphics card / drivers etc?

Any further suggestions or advice appreciated, thank you.

We need to determine whether it is a hardware or software issue..

Turn off the computer.   Tap f2 while turning on the computer.   It will go to bios.   Please stay on the bios screen for 30 mins.    If the display is looking good on bios then it is a software issue.

If the display is not looking good on the bios screen then it is a hardware issue.

If it is a software issue try the following the steps..

    Try windows x
    go to device manager
    expand display adapter
right click on display driver - uninstall
    Restart the computer

    It should work fine..

If it is still not working
Uninstall the display adapter from device manager
    Dont restart the computer.
    Go to support.acer.com
    chose your country
type snid or chose your model
    go to drivers
    Install the display driver

    Hello,

    Thank you for your replies

I booted into the bios utility, screen seemed a little bit flickery straight away definitely not right but seemed to settle in a while, I come back to check in 20 mins and screen was black.  Tried another twice and screen was off each time I returned to see if I could catch it going daft like the past couple of days before it blacked out.

Yesterday I could barely get into windows and do anything with drivers before the screen went blank, so I kept having to power off each time by holding power button.

Also, I checked some websites for laptop screens and the screen for my model of predator was out of stock at both and would have cost £150.  Didn't expect the inner screen for a 4 yr old laptop to be either that obsolete or pricey.

Tried again this morning on the bios screen, display flickered twice then went off within a minute.  Definitely the laptop screen is at fault.  I'll tick that this question is answered since the advice helped me find cause of the problem for sure.

Think I'll forget about a replacement screen, put the money toward a new laptop, maybe not acer I think a couple of months short of 4 yrs for this problem to start is not good reliability.

Or I could buy a monitor for extra long term usability.  Just going to google to see if there's a way you can have laptop hooked to external monitor and be able to shut down the lid so it's out of the way, without it turning laptop off.

    Thank you Acer-William and Easwar
