Can't reinstall system on D257 netbook. HAL is missing or corrupt?

My aspire D257 died. I sent away for the disks to reinstall the system. Everything is fine until about 2/3 of the way through. Then an error message pops up, "HAL is missing or corrupt, can not continue instalation". What do I do now? I've had nothing but trouble with this computer. Grrrr.

Nope, still nothing. I run the system disk...no problem. Next I run recovery disk 1...no problem. Recovery disk 2 everything seems fine until 2/3 of the way through the progress bar, then the error message pops up. Should not this missing or corrupt HAL be on the disk and therefore replaced/fixed? Beyond frustrated. First and last Acer product for me.

Either your HDD is dead or the recovery disks didn't burn properly. It happens from time to time. You're not dealing with a music cd where a corrupt file can just be skipped over. Every single file counts on these disks. Call Acer and tell them the disks don't work. You have two weeks to try the disks out where they will replace them for free. That would be your best bet. Aside from that you'll have to have the unit repaired.

The same thing could have happened with any other company, and the same solution would be provided. Acer uses the same parts as HP, Toshiba, etc... I've learned from exprerience not to expect any better of the other manufacturers.

Thanks for the help Scotty. agreed the problem could happen with any brand. I've always had Dells up to this one. Never a problem of any sort. perhaps it was just dumb luck. Again, thank you for the help.

Almost positive your HDD is dead. Would you be able to download a test utility to verify?
