Hey, all.

I have an Aspire ES-15. Lost the recovery thumb drive and the hard drive got toasted. I need to reinstall the original copy of Windows 10 on a new hard drive. Installing Win 10 from MS, says "not activated". I went to Acer Support, submitted the SNID, which did absolutely did nothing. Help, please?

Thanks!

If windows is installed you should be able to head to the activation panel and post the key into it to activate it, to get the key, head to start -> cmd and tyoe

    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
Paste what it tells you into the activation panel and it should be good to go

Do you have an old copy of Windows 7. If you can activate an old copy MS will still upgrade a valid version online for free.

Unfortunately, no...I don't have an old copy. My wife has an updated version of my laptop. Would it be possible to use her recovery drive and have my computer show up as "activated". Sorry, I'm actually more of a Mac, Linux, Unix guy...so, I'm not super well versed in Windows.

    Thanks!

Look adfitz1963, follow the “Activate Windows 10” process that is very simple, follow the “Activate using a digital license” and do that, you have to have a Microsoft account so read the above from Microsoft and follow all their instructions. I've Digitally activated and upgraded old laptops that have had Win-7, Win-8 an 8.1's to Win-10 and laptops and desktops and reinstalled Wn-10 Home and Pro many many times and the digital license always worked perfectly as its connected to your hardware and BIOS and your Microsoft account, you must be doing something wrong and/or you are not registered with Microsoft with an account that Microsoft can link your laptop to and that is why it doesn’t work.

You should be able to install the win10 iso without a key by just skipping the step I think then!  Does it not give you the option to skip?

You could always live boot into your distro of choice and grab the key as well by reading from one of proc or sys :)
