For the past few days my 7 year old Acer Ferrari 5000 has been experiencing some problems. Yesterday evening it just decided it was not gonna boot.
I powered it down.
Took out the memory, (actually switched around memory modules to see if that was the culprit). It was not.
So I checked the hard disk next I took it out, put it back in and attempted to boot again.
When I start the computer, all I see is a blank black screen.
- No BIOS screen with Ferrari formula one logo.
- No ability at all to boot into BIOS
- Obviously, it does not boot to Windows
- The hard disk LED remains constant (no animated activity).
I decided to leave it alone for the rest of the evening, just before I went to bed, I started the machine again and surprisingly it booted to the desktop.
I kept it on until 3 am played some music throughout that time.
When I woke up in the morning, I didn't bother turning it on thinking everything was ok.
This evening when I returned from work, I tried booting again and it was the same problem.
I took out the hard disk, inspected it and reinstalled it.
Tried a few times to boot, left it on for quite a while until I heard beeping sound.
I turned off, waited a while, tried a few more times, it eventually restarted itself, showed the BIOS screen. I booted into the BIOS by hitting F2. Changed the boot settings from CD/DVD first to second after the hard disk.
Back to the Blank black screen again.
I am beginning to wonder if its the hard disk that has been going bad, but I find that strange considering that I have been using it just fine up until now.
It is currently running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.
System was originally preloaded with Windows Vista Ultimate in January of 2007, upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit in October of 2009 and eventually a custom install of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit in August of 2012.
