It might help to know what Acer model you have. However, I'm going out on a limb here from past display issues for me and a few other contributors and suggest that you reset the bios to factory defaults. Press F2 as the Acer bios screen appears on startup. Once into the bios, press F9 for factory defaults. Then F10 to save and exit to see if that fixes the problem. Hope it does it for you.

Would this fix my problem? I have an aspire 5552 and the black boot up screen has red lines and fizzy red on it. Once I have logged in all the open window screens display a blue colour rather than white. I have plugged in an external monitor and there are no problems with the colours.

    Thanks

Can't hurt to try it. If it doesn't work, you can also try reloading factory defaults again by pressing the DelKey immediately after powering on. Then wait a few moments for another startup screen to appear and press the EnterKey to reload bios defaults and exit to the OS. If the screen is still haywire after the OS loads then shut down and do a cold-reboot again to see if the screen comes back normally. Report back with results.

No go I'm afraid. Tried it all, even took the thing to bits including the screen. I think having trawled the net it's the radeon chips having overheated. Guess I will just get a new machine. Thanks for the info though.

If you can influence the problem by physically moving the unit, or parts of the unit, the problem is hardware related. It may be a bad connection between the LCD and the graphics adapter, or the LCD cable may have actually broken on one side (which would explain the problem being only for certain colors.) Grainy screen indicates interference, which again could be due to a voltage drop caused by a split cable. I would suggest, if you're already at a point where you're looking to get a new unit, to just look online for disassembly instructions and check for yourself.
