The website's datasheet refers to SDXC and SDHC cards being acceptbale but no maximun capacity is given.  Will my M5 take, say 128gb, 256gb or larger if / when invented ?

Microsoft has released an update that will allow for removable storage devices larger than 32GB to be recognized and utilized by the system. At this point there is no size available that you would even be able to find that your system can't handle. So in short, yes you would be able to use 128/256 512 or whatever have you wth your system.
