Aspire 5250-BZ808 will not connect to public Wi-Fi

My daughter-in-law's laptop will not connect to public WiFi ... it will however connect to the wifi at my house and her parent's house.

I have tried to connect her laptop to the local Community College's website (even had their IT guys check it out, but they're not sure what is going on) and McDonalds with no luck ...

I have updated the network adapter with the latest drivers ...

no idea what is going on and how to get this working right.

    Hi,

May be you should enter the password of the public Wi-Fi concerned

hey, I'm not sure if you're trying to be helpful or not, but I'll assume you're trying to BE helpful.

McDonald's doesn't have a password for their public internet, you only have to attempt to go to a page and then it brings up an agreement page that you have to accept before you can go anywhere else.

The Mid Michigan Community College's (MMCC) public wifi doesn't use a password either. The IT guys at MMCC also tried to connect to their 'staff' net using a password and were not successful.

    NEXT?

To be honest, if MMCC IT are baffled, I am unlikely to come up with the solution but...

Were either able to provide you with detailed required settings?

Do their Intranets appear in your 'found' list (with adequate signal strength)? If not, are they broadcasting their SSID? If SSID is not being broadcast (I would have thought this unlikely) you may need to tick 'Connect even if network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)' in Wireless Properties > Connections.

I would assume they are both providing DHCP. In the unlikely event they aren't, you may need to check your IP address, Subnet mask and default gateway. (Just trying to cover all bases. It would be silly if you had to set these for open/public access points.)

Are you using the same band? 2.4GHz or 5GHz. If you have one or the other set, try ticking both (It'll do no harm). You never know, they may be on the older 2.4GHz for compatibility while perhaps you are set on 5GHz only. You can check this through Wireless Network Connection Status > Wireless Properties > Connection > Configure.

Sorry, but that's about as far as I can go re Wi-Fi. Smiley Frustrated

The IT guys at the college checked all the details, but did not give me any ideas of what they were doing.

The intranets DO appear in the found list of her computer ... when we click to connet it comes up with the message that it can't connect and we run the trouble shooter and the only thing it REALLY does is reset the wireless adapter.

They appear in mine as well ... I connect right up ..

McDonald's is the same way ... she can't, I can

She can come to my house and her parents' house and connect up to those resepective wireless connections.

So as little as I know, I'm baffled and she has no warranty now ... nor does she or I have the money to PAY for support from the company that made her laptop (Acer).

... don't know how to check the DHCP or find out if they're on the same band (but, my PC is newer than hers ... wouldn't I have the same problem she was having if they were different bands?)

I'll have to wait until I can get to the college again to check the bands

Not necessarily. You could be set to 'talk' on both bands. The other perhaps set only on one band (that doesn't match McDonald's and College but does match your home).

This may all be a red herring as you say her machine is seeing the connections. I don't honestly know if this would happen if they were on different bands.

Perhaps you could get both machines side by side and compare all Wi-Fi settings.

The reason might be the wireless channel set on the public Wi-Fi routers which is not matching with the wireless card. Most of the wireless device in USA by default set to use channel 6. Most of the public networks might be using different channels due to interference. That might be the reason the laptop is not getting connected to public Wi-Fi. If you can let me know the wireless card vendor and the wireless card settings of your laptop I can check if there is any settings that can be done on the wireless card to accept different channels.

You can contact router manufacture or the ISP to get the configuration done.
