Aspire 5742 screen darkens and brightens

My Acer Aspire 5742 functions normally for a while (from between two hours to a few days), then the screen starts to dim to blackness. If I move the mouse the screen brightens again but returns to darkness within about a second. Moving the mouse again has the same effect.  It is possible to do a soft Restart by aiming the mouse to the Restart option during the brief periods of brightness. After restart the machine is OK again for a few hours or a day or two, then the problem occurs again.

A full scan with my McAfee total protection does not show anything bad.

This may be an issue with your monitor itself but to test it out there are several options you can try to troubleshoot and test to see if it is the monitor or not.

    1.  If you don't have a copy of Linux Knoppix you can download one at www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html this can take up to approx 8 hours to download as it is approx 4.3 GB which you can then burn onto DVD to test your computer with and I always have a copy of it with me when helping others in my community with troubleshooting their computer issues especially when trying to back-up info even when they get the windows blue screen of death.

    2.  When turning on computer press F8 or whatever option your screen tells to for boot menu, you can then select to boot from last know configuration and try that.

    3.  You can try recovering your computer to previous restore point by using either of 2 options

3.1  If you are already in windows click on windows Icon bottom left corner of screen, select all programs, select Accessories Folder, select System Tools Folder, then select System Recovery and choose a previous restore point.

3.2  If your computer power is already off turn on computer and press F8 or whatever option your screen tells to for boot menu and selecting recovery mode and choose a previous restore point.

    4.  Worst case senario back-up anything you do not want to loose including files, documents, pictures, videos, Browser favorites, ETC..  anything you can think off that you absolutely cannot live without.

4.1  Follow option 3 but instead of choosing a previous restore point this time select Restore to factory defaults.

4.2  If you don`t have this option and you have Recovery Disks.  Make sure the computer power is off then turn it on and insert Recovery Disk into the CD or DVD drive and rebbot the computer again.  As soon as you do press F2 for most PC models out there to get into what is called the BIOS.  in there you can move to the bootable options by following the directions on screen and make the CDéDVD the first bootable device then hard drive the second bootable device then select F10 to save the changes made in BIOS and will exit and reboot computer.  Then when asked press any key on the keyboard as there is no `Any Key Button as the joke goes with Windows` to boot from then CD and follow the steps to Recover from Factory Defaults.

If each of these options have been tried and tested for the same amount of time or more and you get the same Fading issues then the problem is your monitor at which point you can have your monitor fixed or replaced or your have the options of purchasing a new computer if that is the way you choose to go with at that point.  I do hope this helps you and GOOD LUCK!
