Acer S7 Fan Problem - Bios Update ?

Hello Everyone!

I just bought the new Aspire S7 with i.7 256GB. However, when I open any program (something as simple as a word document), the fan inside (I believe it’s the fan) makes a lot of noise (like a airplane taking off!).

Have others found the fan noise to be very loud or is it just me?

I was reading somewhere you can ‘quiet’ the fan by doing something with the bios, is that true?

I would love to keep it but the sound is driving me a bit crazy! Robot Sad

Thank you for your help!Smiley Happy

This was already discussed just a few posts down from yours. The latest BIOS improves the fan spin-up. So you should use the provided utlity to check if there are any updates for your machine and it should find a BIOS update if there is one.

Unfortunately the i7 version of the S7 does generate more heat and the fan spins up much more easily/quickly. The i5 version is considerably quieter. Considering the performance difference between the i5 and i7 is so small for these machines I was quite surprised about this.

Thank you very much for your help! Looks like I will have to wait for a 256GB i5 Smiley Happy

It is a shame that Acer couldn't get better thermal cooling with the i7 without so much fan noise. On the desktop processors the difference between an i5 and an i7 is considerable. But on those ultrabook mobile processors, the difference is realistically only about 10%. I also wanted an i5 256GB. This combination does exist but only in Taiwan. So as I still wanted one I went for the i5 128GB...and of course, quickly ran out of space! Smiley Happy
