I have a new iconia a500 (upgraded to android 4.0), a newKmashi Micro HDMI Male to VGA Female Converter Cable, and an old 3m micro projector.  When everything's connected, both the computer and the projector say they're getting a signal, but all I see is the blue 3M screen.  Is there something else I need to do to get them to talk?  The cable claims it's a plug and play adaptor to convert to VGA, complete with a chip to convert from digital to analog.  I don't know if there's a setting somewhere in the tablet I need to change or what.

I really want to be able to take the tablet and projector to conferences to display slides....Help please?

We would suggest contacting the manufacturer of the cable for assistance.

Just a thought but I would try connection the cable to a monitor capable of 1920 × 1080 resolution and see what happens. I have seen older projectors bluescreen if given a higher resolution than they can handle. If that works then it is a matter of reducing the screen resolution to one the projector can handle.
