Was very fortunate, when I upgraded I purchased access key and downloaded windows 8. In doing so it does not erase your whole disc, it keeps your former settings in a file. When I went through program files I found Acers e-recovery. Activated it and now I have Vista back on my rig, phew, and the DVD driver is working again

Most older computers do not have the hardware capability to run windows 8. I would talk to microsoft first before trying to upgrade agian. You may need to switch out some hardware.

No intention of going back to windows 8 with this rig, but still need to reset back to vista

I don't blame you. The main issue with the older comptuers is that the GPU does not support Win 8. You have your recovery disks? If not, go to http://store.acer.com and click on the recovery area on the top bar.
