I have a laptop ACER Extensa 5430-5855 and with this problem :  When I turn the switch ON, the only thing that happend is

  1.   The light on the switch itself turn on and stays on until I force the computer to turn off.
  2.   I hear, for a maximum of two seconds, the sound of the DVD drive.  Then notthing else happend.
  3.   On the front of the computer, the led showing that the computer is now connected on the AC voltage, is on and stay on as lond as I don't turn the computer off.
  4.   On the screen, nothing happens.  I don't see any welcome screen saying that I have such BIOS builder or that I can press on { F2 }.  What usually appear on that screen, we typically don't pay much attention since when it's working well, we don't bother with that.
  5.   And of course, since it stop right at the step mention just above (point 4), the computer doesn't go anywhere, do anything and is absolutly useless but for my precious last info laying on my hard drive.
  6.   I know that I could bring my HDD to a repair shop an retrieve the info on the drive.  But I also want to use the computer if the only kind of repair is to reactivate the BIOS, if it is the case.  Or changing the chip if also worthwhile.
  7.   I imagined also that it could be the HDD who just died.  But on the second thought, the opening screen don't even show up, the brought by the BIOS.  So...

What can I do to make this machine work as it use to do ?

You are stating that the screen stays black.  This could point to either a video card issue or an LCD issue.

Please attempt to connect the system to an external monitor.
