532h netbook black screen. Power light and fan on but no hdd light. AAAARRRGGG. HELP

My 532h netbook shut down suddenly the other day and is now unresponsive.  At first I could start it and I could hear the hdd running and see its light blinking but the screen was absolutely black with nothing showing from the the start.  I tried hitting f10 while starting and the screen showed the Acer name/logo and froze right there.  After that the HDD light doesn't flash at all but the power light will come on and the fan runs. When I press the power button it lights up, the fan turns on, then it automatically turns off and on again once.  It stays on after the one restart.

I tried updating the bios with a usb drive (holding fn and esc when turning the power on), 2 different pny usb drives actually, to no avail.  The power light never blinks for me and the usb drive never blinks like all of the instructions say that it will.

 

What can I do?  I would at least like to get the info off the hard drive if possible.

 

Please help.  I'm pretty handy and able to figure things out with instructions.  It seems like this is a common problem with these computers based on the amount of search results I got but nothing has worked for me.

Update: a friend came and pulled the battery and it started up last night like nothing was wrong. This morning it is back to where it was before. It is doing nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
