Hello experts,

I have a question about the Chromebook Plus CB514-4H (model year 2024).

Can anyone give me detailed instructions for newbies on how to disable hardware protection (Write Protect) on this Chromebook model?

I've already managed to install Linux using an alternative bootloader. However, my goal is to install other operating systems, especially Windows, from a USB flash drive. Currently, I can only boot into Linux or the alternative bootloader, but I can't boot from a USB flash drive containing Windows or similar software.

Could someone please explain what steps are necessary to prepare this Chromebook for Windows installation (e.g., disabling hardware protection and any other necessary BIOS adjustments)?

On Chromebooks like the CB514‑4H, the write protection is a hardware and firmware safeguard implemented jointly by Acer and Google. It is designed to prevent modification of the firmware and to maintain the verified boot chain.

These write protect locks cannot be removed through normal user settings.
Attempts to bypass them usually involve hardware modifications or unsupported firmware flashing, which is not recommended.
Modding the firmware can permanently disable verified boot, break ChromeOS recovery, and in some cases brick the device.
Google and Acer do not provide support for running Windows or other unsupported operating systems on Chromebooks.

For stability and security, it’s best to keep the Chromebook on its supported ChromeOS platform or use Linux within the supported developer/alternative bootloader paths. Modifying firmware to disable write protection is not advised.

I managed to get an alternative bootloader to work in order to install Linux. Now I want to install Windows on an external hard drive, but I can't seem to get any further. Bridging jumpers and removing the battery didn't work. I need Windows for a few programs that aren't available for Chrome OS or Linux, so I want to install Windows on an external hard drive. Unfortunately, I can't afford a Windows PC or laptop at the moment, so I'm asking for instructions. I'm not very familiar with the online instructions. I can't seem to get to grips with the online instructions and I'm having problems. Nothing has worked, and the instructions on YouTube didn't work as they should either.
