Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (PHN16-71): GPU Upgrade options if GPU is dead

Hello there,

I have Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 (2023) (PHN16-71) with RTX 4050 and i5-13500HX.

I think my GPU is dead as I have done more than 10 windows reinstalls and different driver version and in the end I have determined it is not a software issue and it is a hardware issue. I still don't know if my GPU is actually dead or there is some other hardware problem. I am looking forward to go to my nearest acer authorized service center to determine what hardware has failed on my laptop.

So, my main question is, if by chance my GPU is really dead, then can I ask the technician to use RTX 4060 instead of RTX 4050 as a upgrade? Or they will not do it? Please let me know if you know the answer.

If the GPU is no longer detected after multiple clean Windows installs and driver attempts, it’s possible the hardware has failed—but before jumping to conclusions, it’s worth reviewing how drivers were installed.

With newer models like the PHN16-71, Acer customizes both Intel and NVIDIA drivers to match the EC firmware, BIOS behavior, and thermal/power profiles. Installing drivers from third-party sites—or even directly from Intel or NVIDIA—can cause serious issues:

• GPU not detected
• Optimus switching failure
• Fan curve or power throttling misbehavior
• Sleep/wake instability

Also, avoid using Driver Updater tools or “booster” apps. These often install generic drivers that don’t match the laptop’s firmware stack, and can silently break GPU handoff or EC coordination.
