What Acer product do you have, as an "Audio In" port is no longer used and were specifically used for microphones which is an audio in device or a recording device that you want to record audio with the laptop with.

Below is the left side of an Aspire 5750 model laptop with an audio in port

    Hi scottyb53,

On the CB242YG, that audio port is a headphone/line‑out jack. It’s there to pass through audio from whatever source is feeding the monitor via HDMI.

Since HDMI carries both video and audio, the monitor can take the audio signal and output it through that jack so you can:

    • Plug in headphones directly to the monitor.
    • Connect external powered speakers without running a separate cable from your PC.

It’s not an “audio in” for a microphone — it won’t record sound or accept an input signal. It’s purely for outputting the audio that comes in over HDMI.

If you’re not hearing anything, make sure the HDMI source is set to send audio to the monitor in your system’s sound settings.

On the back of my monitor are 2 ports. One is labeled AUDIO IN. The other is identified with an ikon of a set of headphones, making it an AUDIO OUT port.

CoPilot AI agrees with your explanation of the AUDIO IN not being suitable for a mic.

What you say about HDMI makes sense to me. In other words, that AUDIO IN port is a second port, serving the same function as the the AUDIO IN port on my computer box. They are integrated by way of HDMI.

CoPilot AI suggests it can be used to digitize an analog signal. But I imagine I would be required to download the software for that function.
