Subject: Acer 5420 boot failure — recovery options depend on OS version

    Hi MichaelScott454,

Since the Acer 5420 originally shipped with Windows Vista, and you mentioned trying a Windows 10 boot device without success, it’s likely your system was running Windows 8.1 — especially if it was upgraded at some point.

🧭 If it was Windows 8.1:

You can try the automatic recovery trigger:

    1. Power off the laptop.
    2. Turn it on and force shutdown three times in a row during boot (before Windows loads).
    3. On the third boot, it should enter Automatic Repair.
    4. Choose Advanced Options → Troubleshoot → Reset or Refresh your PC.

Here’s a quick video guide:🎥 Windows 8.1 Recovery Trigger Tutorial

🧭 If it was Windows Vista:

Unfortunately, Vista doesn’t support that recovery trigger. You’ll need either:

    • A Vista installation DVD or
    • A Vista recovery ISO, like this one:💾 Vista Recovery Disc — Archive.org 💡 Burn it to a DVD or USB, boot from it, and choose “Repair your computer.”

You can also try Easy Recovery Essentials, which supports Vista:🔧 NeoSmart Vista Recovery Disk

Let us know if you need help identifying the OS version or preparing a bootable recovery disk. I’ve still got a Vista machine running, so I can walk you through it.

There is NO such model as the Aspire 5420, there is a 2012 Aspire 5410 model, are you sure that its an Acer model, as Dell have a Latitude 5420 but not Acer. Have a look again at the underneath of the laptop to what exact model you have, as the Acer 5420 does not come up in any search on the Acer service guide search or drivers search.

Anyway, if its an Aspire 5410 then you can definitely run that model on Win-10 Home easily, I'm running a n Aspire 5750 on Win-10 Pro and its virtually the same spec as the 5410 and it runs perfectly and has so since Win-10 was released. Make sure that you have the OS on a 2.5" SSD boot drive and the ram upgraded to 8GB at 2x 4GB DDR3-1066MT/s or DDR3-1333MT/s type ram, as that is all that you need to upgrade to the Win-10 OS. If you want drivers for the Aspire 5410 look HERE as they have available 127 files for Acer the Aspire 5410.

Also change the battery and do a hard reset by changing the main battery and then take the RTC/BIOS out or its better to change it completely (its a 2032 type button battery) and shot its casings +&- pins to reset CMOS, then leave the laptop like that for 60min or preferably overnight so that the laptop resets properly and completely as and afterwards and when you replace all the components, the laptop should reboot and reset properly. if it doesn't, then you have internal main power rail problems that need pinpointing to where and which mosfet or capacitor resistor chips are shorted and changed and replaced and fixed. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

Below is the appropriate adapters and Batteries for the Aspire 5410 laptop. Make sure that your old adapter is also working properly as that could also be a factor why your laptop is not booting and its battery is not charging.
