Hi,

I would like a bit of help and advice please from more knowledgeable people than me.

I have a Acer Aspire ES1-512-C5YW laptop with a 500 GB HDD which I now do not use.

I also have a Tecknet docking station.

Would I be able to take the hard drive out of the laptop and use it for storage with my docking station?

I enclose some photos. The other hard drive shown is from an older computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

You'd need to check both the drive connector on the computer and the Tecknet (or the drive you have inserted), which both appear to be Serial ATA. You can check this yourself. If the drive connector on the computer and the external drive inserted in the Tecknet are the same, you could put the drive from the computer into the Tecknet, but you'd need to know if they're compatible.

One question: if you remove the drive from the device, will you put a new drive in the computer?
You should also know that if you put the drive from the computer into the Tecknet, if they're compatible, you'll have to format it, as it won't work with the operating system. I think you already know this because you're going to use it as a storage drive.

Finally, if the drive on your computer is 1000GB or less, it won't be of much use because it's too little storage. It would be better to buy a larger capacity external USB drive. You can even find SSD-type external USB drives. In that case the coupling unit will not be necessary.

In any case, please wait for more answers.
