Aspire TC-780 (KBL): Upgrading to a SSD (?)

Trying to extend the life of my Windows 10 PC.

(1) It has the integrated Intel Graphic 630 so, the PCI-E slots is open. Should I get a (2 TB) M.2 SSD or a SATA SDD?

(2) Either way, I'm thinking I should install the SDD, image the HDD to the SDD, them make the SDD the boot/OS drive (Windows 10). I assume this is done in the BIOS. Is this the best way to go or ?

Thanks!

Hi @NW1 — great idea to upgrade your Aspire TC-780! A few things to consider:

    🧩 Storage Compatibility:

    • The TC-780 doesn’t have an M.2 slot for NVMe SSDs.
    • You can use a SATA SSD (2.5-inch) — it’s plug-and-play and fully supported.
    • If you really want M.2, you’d need a PCIe adapter, but booting from NVMe may not be supported by your BIOS.

    🛠️ Upgrade Steps:

    1. Install the SATA SSD.
    2. Use a tool like Macrium Reflect or EaseUS Todo Backup to clone your HDD to the SSD.
    3. After cloning, enter BIOS and set the SSD as the primary boot device.
    4. Optionally, wipe the old HDD or use it for storage.

📌 Tip: Make sure Secure Boot is disabled if the SSD doesn’t boot right away.

Let me know if you need help with cloning or BIOS settings. This upgrade will give your TC-780 a noticeable speed boost.

"If you really want M.2, you’d need a PCIe adapter…"

    Understood.

"…but booting from NVMe may not be supported by your BIOS."

Any way to tell up front or just take the plunge and see?
