Chromebook won't play 4K Dash cam videos from SD card, black screen or still Image

Lately my Chromebook is not reading video from my dash cam SD card. I have two dash cams, one records in 1080p on the TS format on a 64g card. I have no problem with this as it plays fine on the built in video player and on the VLC app. The other dash cam records in 4k on the mp4 format. This will not play on the built in player or the VLC app. On the built in I get a black screen. On the VLC I get a still picture. Both show movement on the play line. SD card checks out okay as it will play on the dash cam.

Sounds like your dash cam is doing something special to the files that isn't compatible with typical codecs. Contact them to see what's needed to view their files.

Your Chromebook likely struggles with the 4K MP4 dash cam videos due to their high processing demands and potentially unsupported HEVC (H.265) codec, common for 4K. While your 1080p TS files work, the black screen/still image on 4K suggests a decoding limitation of your Chromebook's hardware or the video players. To resolve this, consider transcoding the 4K videos to a lower resolution or a more compatible codec on a more powerful device, or adjust your dash cam settings to record in a less demanding format.
