After agreeing to updates and shutting down my laptop yesterday, I'm having problems with the screen. I start the computer, it comes on and asks me to log on, I log on and it sends me to a black screen. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't. How do I fix it?

You should never shut down the laptop during an update process even if it takes hours to complete, you may have corrupted BIOS or the Windows boot loader. First boot to BIOS with F2 and press F9 (reset) then F10 (save changes). Boot to Safe Mode https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-startup-settings-1af6ec8c-4d4a-4b23-adb7-e76eef0b847f
and "Reset this PC" without losing your files option.

A black screen on an Acer Aspire laptop can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from software issues to hardware problems. Troubleshooting steps include checking power, restarting the laptop, updating drivers, and potentially resetting the BIOS.

    Troubleshooting Steps:-
Check Power and Connections: Ensure the laptop is properly connected to the power outlet and that the power cord is not damaged.
Hard Reset: Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds to force a shutdown, then restart the laptop.
Restart the Laptop: If the laptop is unresponsive, attempt a regular restart.
Update Display Drivers: Outdated or corrupted display drivers can cause black screen issues. Download and install the latest graphics drivers from the Acer website.
Check BIOS Settings: Incorrect BIOS settings might prevent the display from working properly.
Check for External Devices: Disconnect any external monitors or devices that may be interfering with the display.
Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode to rule out software conflicts or corrupted files.
System Restore: Use System Restore to revert to a previous working state.
Professional Help: If the issue persists, consider seeking help from a qualified technician or Acer support.
    Potential Causes:
    Software Issues:
Corrupted files, software conflicts, or outdated drivers can cause black screen issues.
    Hardware Issues:
Problems with the graphics card, display cable, or other hardware components can also result in a black screen.
    BIOS Configuration:
Incorrect BIOS settings can prevent the laptop from booting to the operating system.
    Advanced Troubleshooting:
    Check for BIOS Access:
If the laptop won't display, attempt to access the BIOS (usually by pressing F2 or Del while the laptop starts).
    Check for Hardware Defects:
If you can access the BIOS, you can check for hardware issues like RAM problems or hard drive detection.
    Consider a System Image:
If software issues are suspected, consider restoring the laptop from a system image or backup.
