Hey my acer pc is very slow compared to my old pc it has been since i bought it. my old pc had worse specs so this pc should be faster. I've tried re downloading windows 11, ive optimized the power to quickest setting. ive disabled most start up apps not sure what else to do. writing this my task manger says 50% CPU, 80% Memory, 100% disk and it fluctuates to 30-50 CPU sometimes will hit 100% 70-80% memory and the disk is usually 100%. i have chrome open, task manger, and setting's open. The pc doesn't have much on it and has been slow since brand new.

Any ideas what i should do ?

thanks

We need to know more about the specs on your XC-840 model. How much memory is installed? IIRC they came with 4GB, 8GB or 16GB installed from the factory. What size and type of drive is installed? They came with either a HDD (500GB, 1TB or 2TB) or SSD (256GB or 512GB). My first guess is yours was one toward the bottom end of those specs, with 4GB of memory and a HDD. When running pretty close to a vanilla install of Windows it's tough to run using less than 4GB of memory. If you are running short of memory the system will swap to disk, and swapping to a HDD is really, really slow. If that matches what you see, the solution is to do both a memory and drive upgrade.

Your system is a bit odd, with a hybrid laptop/desktop motherboard design. It uses the typical laptop memory (DDR4 SO-DIMMs at 3200MHz) in either 4GB or 8GB sizes, with one or two installed. I'd likely do the full upgrade and purchase two 8GB SO-DIMMs to give you 16GB of memory. Then I'd get an M.2 NVMe SSD. Don't pay extra for a PCIe 4.0 version, since yours is PCIe 3.0 and the newer SSDs will run at the older speed. The best price/performance seems to be the 1TB and 2TB versions.

Install the memory and SSD in the system, then use cloning software to clone the existing HDD to the new SSD. Once the cloning is complete the open Disk Management and verify that all the partitions on the HDD are duplicated on the SSD, with only the system partition (C:) a different size. If they look good, reboot and go into the BIOS to enable the boot menu (in the boot section, usually disabled by default). Save and exit and hit F10 during the reboot to get the menu. Choose the SSD as your boot source. Windows will come up really fast. Verify things are working as they should, then launch Disk Management again and wipe all partitions off the HDD and create only one partition that uses the entire drive. You can then use that drive for data or as a backup drive for the rest of the system. You should be good to go with a much faster machine!

You've got a unwanted program running in the background even with low ram and no SSD, which more RAM and a SSD is always better,

Look at the task manager to see what's hogging it.

oh sorry forgot that its 8gb ram 1TB HDD i have 79 GB used from the 1TB. shouldn't this be a decently quick PC ?

google chrome is at the top 525mb, antimalware service executable is 147mb, service host is 95mb, task manager 74mb and window's explorer 60mb. right now task manager is showing 27% CPU, 57% memory and 4% Disk i notice its somewhat quick when its low like right now but it will fluctuate and be slow. with just google chrome open. also takes a while to boot up my old pc was pretty much instant boot up.

I think that your RAM is OK, but as BILLSEY, Get a M.2 NVMe SSD.

Maybe go to 1GB but the SSD is the MUST CHANGE.

It'll get you quick boots, like under 10 seconds. It's awesome

Here is a post by Stevegen.

Be sure to check your complete model #b and be sure that you have to accept the SSD that he posted.

Just some further advice to your slow Aspire XC-840 desktop and to quicken it up, I suggest that you first upgrade this desktop to its max ram capacity to 16GB at 2x 8GB DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 into its two ram slots. As 8GB is way too low of an amount of ram for the Win-11 OS and for application these days. Your Aspire XC-850 will operate much quicker with 16GB ram.

Also get a quick M.2 SSD PCIe 3 x4 lane drive like the Samsung 970 EVO Plus as its the quickest Gen 3 M.2 SSD drive on the market runs at 5300MB/s read/write speeds (also, if its cheaper to buy an M.2 Gen 4 drive, then get that drive as it will work in your desktop) also the 970 EVO Plus drive comes in either 1TB or 2TB capacities. Also make sure that you have the bios version R01-A3 installed in your TX-840 desktop and also the latest Win-11 24H2 updated to OS build: 26100.4061, as doing all this will make your Aspire XC-840 desktop perform to its fullest performance potential. Good luck and hope this helps you further.

would a kingston NV3 1TB be good for the SSD found one on sale ? And for the ram i took cover off the factory one is Samsung M471A1K43EB1-CWE 8GB 1Rx8 PC4-3200AA. Do i have to match the ram or can i get any brand as long as its 8gb ram and 3200MHz ? having hard time finding the exact ram.

Yes, the Kingston is a reasonably good model. For the memory you can get any brand, as long as it's 3200MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM and not XMP. Try running Resource Monitor and look at the memory tab. Here's mine right now, pretty much maxed out with 16GB of memory:

The "hard faults per second" is the indication it's swapping out. As you can see, I have way too many tabs open in Firefox. 😉
