I'm using an Acer XB253Q GW monitor, which supports up to 280Hz refresh rate. However, on Windows, I'm unable to set the refresh rate above 120Hz. When I try to select 240Hz or 280Hz, the screen goes black, shows "no signal," and then reverts back to 120Hz.

I’ve already:

  • Installed the official Acer driver (INF and ICM files),
  • Verified I’m using a proper DisplayPort 1.2 or higher cable (not HDMI),
  • Tried using CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to define a higher refresh rate, but 280Hz is marked in red and not accepted,
  • Set custom FreeSync range and detailed resolutions,
  • Used DDU to clean and reinstall GPU drivers,

Let's say the screen refresh rate is 300hz. If your graphics adapter does not support this value, it will give a no signal error. The hz value of the screen is related to the graphics adapter.

It seems that your graphics card supports a maximum refresh rate of 120hz. Please let us know the model and name of the graphics adapter, whether you are using a laptop, workstation, desktop, etc., and we will send you the details.

The biggest reason why the problems are not solvedis if someone who says there is a problem with the GPU says; If I change the case, will the problem be solved? That's the whole point! The concepts are different! We should not go off topic.

I have an RTX 3070 Ti. It was working at 240 Hz just a few days ago, but suddenly my computer wouldn’t turn on and Windows Repair appeared. It deleted all my files, so I reinstalled Windows on the drive — but that didn’t help either.

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics cards support max 360hz. Please download the original iso image from the windows website. Boot to a flash drive. Perform the installation. Install the latest versions of the chipset, graphics adapter, etc. software. Restart your computer and try increasing to 280hz again.

If you encounter any negative situation after performing these steps, it may not be related to the screen, but rather a hardware chipset failure of the graphics adapter.

Warning; Please install only the graphics adapter driver. Do not install GeForce Experience!

If you are unable to set the refresh rate above 120Hz, it's likely due to a few factors. First, check your monitor's settings and ensure there isn't a setting limiting the refresh rate. Next, verify your display cable is a high-speed HDMI cable or a DisplayPort cable, as older cables may not support higher refresh rates. Also, ensure your GPU drivers are up to date, and if necessary, try a clean driver installation. Finally, if you are using a laptop, make sure the HDMI port supports HDMI 2.0 or higher for higher refresh rates at 1440p.
    Here's a more detailed breakdown:

    1. Check Your Monitor's Settings:
Some monitors have built-in settings that can limit the maximum refresh rate.
Refer to your monitor's manual or online resources to find these settings and ensure they are not limiting the refresh rate to 60Hz or lower.
    2. Verify Your Display Cable:
If you are using an HDMI cable, make sure it's a high-speed HDMI cable (HDMI 1.4 or better) or use a DisplayPort cable.
Older HDMI versions (like HDMI 1.2) may not support higher refresh rates at higher resolutions.
    3. Update and Clean GPU Drivers:
Outdated or corrupted GPU drivers can cause issues with refresh rates.
Update to the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website (Nvidia, AMD, or Intel).
If updating doesn't fix the issue, try a clean driver installation using a tool like Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
    4. Check Laptop HDMI Port:
If you are using a laptop and connecting to an external monitor, ensure the HDMI port on your laptop is HDMI 2.0 or higher.
Older HDMI ports on laptops may not support higher refresh rates at higher resolutions.
    5. Other Potential Issues:
Monitor Firmware: Check for firmware updates for your monitor from the manufacturer's website.
Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows installation is up to date.
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR): Windows 11 introduces DRR, which can dynamically adjust the refresh rate based on what you are doing.
CRU (Custom Resolution Utility): If you are using CRU, be careful as improper use can cause issues.
