It appears you're encountering a common issue with the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58, where the laptop doesn't fully shut down or enter sleep mode—resulting in the screen turning off while the keyboard backlight and fans remain active. This behavior can stem from various software configurations or hardware interactions. Here's a comprehensive approach to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

🔧 Power Settings and Fast Startup

  1. Adjust Lid Close Behavior:
    • Navigate to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
    • Ensure that the action for "When I close the lid" is set to Sleep or Shut down, based on your preference.(Acer Community)
  2. Disable Fast Startup:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
    • Save changes and restart your laptop.(Acer Community)

Disabling Fast Startup has been noted to resolve similar issues in some cases. (Acer Community)

🛠️ Device Manager and Wake Settings

  1. Identify Devices That Can Wake the Laptop:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type powercfg -devicequery wake_armed and press Enter.
    • This will list devices that can wake your laptop from sleep.(TenForums, Acer Community)
  2. Disable Wake for Specific Devices:
    • For devices like USB hubs or Thunderbolt connections, open Device Manager.
    • Locate the device, right-click, and select Properties.
    • Under the Power Management tab, uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.(Acer Community)

One user identified an external Thunderbolt USB hub as the culprit, which prevented proper sleep mode functionality. (Acer Community)

🔄 BIOS and Firmware Considerations

  • BIOS Updates:
    • Some users have reported that updating the BIOS introduced sleep-related issues. If you've recently updated your BIOS and started experiencing this problem, consider reverting to a previous version. However, proceed with caution, as BIOS downgrades can be risky and may void warranties. (Acer Community)

🔌 External Peripherals and Power Drain

  • Disconnect External Devices:
    • Unplug all external peripherals, including USB devices and external monitors, to determine if any are causing the issue.
  • Perform a Power Drain:
    • Shut down the laptop and disconnect the AC adapter.
    • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
    • Reconnect the AC adapter and power on the laptop.

🧰 Resetting Power Plans

  • Restore Default Power Settings:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press Enter.
    • This will reset all power plans to their default settings, which can resolve configuration issues.

🛠️ Hardware Considerations

  • Check for Loose Connections:
    • If the issue persists, there might be a loose connector between the lid and the motherboard, affecting the sleep sensor. This could explain inconsistent behavior when closing the lid. (Reddit)

If after following these steps the problem remains unresolved, it may be beneficial to consult with Acer Support or visit a certified technician to inspect the hardware components.

The problem is still there, today the laptop went on sleep because of the "sleep after" timer and the keyboard light stayed on along with fans running but the display was off and i couldn't do anything except forcing shutdown and starting again
