When I turn the computer on I get a black screen with the following message.

Reboot and Select proper Boot Device

or Insert Boot Media in selected device and press a key

I press the on/off button on computer to shut down and then press again and computer starts as normal. I unboxed the computer a week ago and it was fine for a few days and now this happens every time I turn it on.

Also, on keypad " and @ keys are reversed. ??????

I am not real clever when it comes to computers and would appreciate any help/advice.

    Hello!

The "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device" error on your new computer, which resolves after a restart, suggests it's not consistently finding your hard drive/SSD at startup. This could be due to a loose internal connection or an incorrect boot order in the BIOS/UEFI settings. For the reversed "@" and """ keys, your keyboard layout in Windows is likely set incorrectly and needs to be changed in the language settings. Given that the computer is only a week old, it's best to contact the retailer or manufacturer's support for assistance, as they can provide specific troubleshooting or warranty options.

What is the full model number of your laptop?

Start with a power reset. To reset your Acer laptop using the battery reset pinhole, first ensure the laptop is turned off and unplugged from the AC adapter. Locate the battery reset pinhole on the bottom of your laptop, usually marked with a battery icon. Using a small paperclip or a similar object, press and hold the reset button inside the pinhole for about 5 seconds. After releasing the button, wait for approximately 5 minutes before plugging in the AC adapter and powering on your laptop. This process temporarily disconnects and reconnects the internal battery, which can help resolve power and battery-related issues.

If this model does not have any reset pinhole. Did you try to reset your laptop by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.

    Hi Sharanji,

Model TC-1785. It is a desktop pc not a laptop and I am still at a loss as to what to do, although I have fixed my keyboard by changing from UK to US English.

Oh sorry, I just saw the model name mentioned in the heading. Glad you fixed the keyboard issue. The error message "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device" on your desktop PC indicates that the computer can't find a bootable device like a hard drive to load the operating system. This usually means the computer's BIOS isn't recognizing the hard drive or the boot order is incorrect.

If the boot problem persists, it's possible there might be corrupted boot files on your hard drive. You might need to attempt a system recovery or reinstall Windows.

Check that the hard drive is securely connected to the motherboard with the data cable and power cable. Also, try a different SATA cable and power cable: to rule out cable issues. If it still doesn't boot, it might be a hardware issue with the hard drive or motherboard. If the device is in warranty pleas reach out to Acer support.
