With the need for biometrics authentication for PassKeys, and the laptop's camera often blocked by an external monitor, I am trying to find a USB fingerprint reader that will function properly with the Acer Nitro series laptops. Those I have tested work well except something in the Acer laptop's power management causes the USB device to wake up the laptop from Sleep mode, no matter if no device has wake up selected and all suspend settings are zero. Does anyone have a USB fingerprint reader working fully with an Acer laptop?

    Hello,

You've hit upon a frustratingly common issue with USB devices and Acer laptops (and sometimes other brands) regarding wake-from-sleep behavior. It's often related to a combination of BIOS settings, Windows power management, and the specific USB device drivers.

Here's a breakdown of potential solutions and considerations, along with recommendations based on general compatibility:

    Understanding the Problem:

    BIOS Settings:
The BIOS controls the fundamental power management of the system. Even if Windows settings are correct, the BIOS can override them.
"Wake on USB" or similar settings in the BIOS must be disabled.
    Windows Power Management:
"Allow this device to wake the computer" settings in Device Manager.
    USB selective suspend settings.
Power plans and their associated sleep/wake timers.
    USB Device Drivers:
Faulty or incompatible drivers can cause unexpected behavior.
Some devices might have inherent power management issues.
    Acer's Specific Implementation:
Acer's specific BIOS and power management implementation might have unique quirks.
    Troubleshooting Steps:

    BIOS Check:

Enter your Acer Nitro's BIOS setup (usually by pressing F2 or Del during startup).
Look for "Wake on USB," "USB Wake Support," or similar settings.
    Ensure these settings are disabled.
Also, check for any BIOS updates from the Acer website, as they sometimes address power management issues.
    Windows Device Manager:

Open Device Manager (search for it in the Windows Start menu).
Locate the USB fingerprint reader under "Biometric devices" or "Universal Serial Bus devices."
    Right-click and select "Properties."
Go to the "Power Management" tab.
Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer."
    Repeat the same process for

EZPassNHany USB Root Hubs that are listed under Universal Serial Bus devices.
Also, in device manager, in the Universal serial bus controllers, right click on each USB Root hub, go to properties, then the power management tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

    Best Regards
