Need help fixing sleep and hibernation issues on Acer CN715-72P running windows 11

I’ve been having a strange issue with my Acer CN715-72P running Windows 11 (up to date).

Over the last three weeks, I’ve noticed that when I close the lid, the laptop doesn’t always go to sleep (or hibernate) reliably. On several occasions, it has even woken up on its own while in my backpack, causing it to become very hot and drain the battery from around 80% down to as low as 12% in just 15 minutes (example of what happened today, despite I have to say that this laptop has almost no battery as on average it lasts 40 minutes).

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Power Settings:
Both “on battery” and “plugged in” settings for closing the lid are set to hibernate (I had it set on sleep previously).

Terminal:

1) Ran powercfg /devicequery wake_armed, which listed only the NVIDIA USB Type-C Port Policy Controller, HID Keyboard Device, and HID-compliant mouse.

2) Ran powercfg /lastwake after unexpected wakes, though sometimes it returned “Wake History Count - 1” with no specific device mentioned.

3) Checked powercfg /waketimers and found timers set by Windows (SystemEventsBroker) and my FreeAlarmClock app (which I use for morning alarms).

4) Ran powercfg /sleepstudy, which generated a Sleep Study Report that revealed multiple sleep–wake transitions with varied reasons (e.g., “Input Mouse,” “Sleep Button,” “Button or Lid Unknown,” and “Application API Unknown”). These entries make me suspect that either a peripheral (or even slight vibrations while in my bag) or a possible fault with the lid sensor might be triggering the wake events.

At the moment, I have the following settings:

  • Hibernate when closing the lid (both battery and plugged in).
  • Allow wake timers: disabled.

Not sure what I should do next, or how to fix this.

Hi, this is a problem with the Hall Effect sensor board or cable, also check hovering a magnet over the left palm rest when the laptop is turned on and see if the laptop goes to sleep mode when moving the magnet next to the Shift key, if the laptop goes to sleep there is an issue with the magnet in the lid under the left bezel if nothing happens the Hall sensor malfunctions, possibly a pinched cable to the Hall sensor board, Not an expensive repair job.

I don't have a magnet right now. What else could I use?

Also, how can you be so certain it's a hardware related thing and not software based?

Hi, check the magnet under the left bezel of the screen with a metal paperclip you will feel it tug near the magnet, or it may even stick to the bezel. I know about this because I have a 2-year-old OLED Asus Vivobook with the same problem and had discussions about using a laptop with the lid closed like a desktop, I told the guy that the laptop will overheat that way and burn the CPU, but he insisted it would not. Such is life.

You described what I went through to determine that this is not a software but a hardware issue. Asus offered to replace the Hall sensor free of charge, but I always put the laptop to sleep manually with the Power Button then close the lid or for longer periods completely shut down. Your battery draining issue is a BIOS function (try a later version) and Windows Modern Standby problem that was fixed recently, check this forum on this topic.

Thank you very much for your very informative response. I'll definitely try with a metal paperclip later today and will keep you updated.

Honestly speaking, I was initially thinking it was a software issue (that's why I tried almost everything to find the program / app / process culprit), however I am starting to realize it may really be hardware related in the end. Who knows.

Not sure if it helps, but this current PC I am using is certainly cursed at this point. While it was a high-end model 3-4 years ago, it experienced:

    • Burnt motherboard after 1 month of usage in 2021 (Acer replaced the motherboard rather than giving me a new PC).
    • Flickering display (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/650068/conceptd-7-pro-rtx-5000-flickering-display#latest). The issue was somehow randomly solved. Not sure if it was via software or hardware in the end. The PC has been formatted several times, as well as certain potentially responsible programs have been uninstalled (Intel HD Graphics Card Command Center + Acer Care Center).
    • Audio crackling (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/679960/acer-cn715-72p-enable-10-bit-conceptd-palette-audio-crackling#latest) when utilizing USB-C devices (in particular), as such a DAC converter.
    • Fans always on high speed (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/713697/conceptd-cn715-72p-fans-always-running-at-high-speed#latest), with no possibility of controlling them.
    • Faulty keyboard (https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/703765/enter-keycap-detached-acer-cn715-72p#latest).

The last issue I had was the faulty keyboard. Between August 2024 and September 2024 the entire keyboard was replaced, new thermal paste was applied, and the fans were cleaned. Then, in November 2024 I formatted / clean installed W11 again.

I would expect the computer to function flawlessly now, but I am still experiencing:

    • Random wake-ups when the lid is closed. I am not sure whether it's really a Hall Sensor thingy as - being aware of the problem - I make sure that the fans are stopping before putting the laptop in my bag. Similarly, this morning I made sure the computer went completely silent before putting it in my backpack, however I found it was almost burning just after 15 minutes I had it my bag (it had woken up randomly).
    • Fans are still a bit faulty. Sometimes I hear them running at different speeds or as if there's something obstructing them.

I hope this gives you more context.

    EDIT: Needless to say that:

    1) Acer has completely abandoned this lineup.

    2) Acer software is pure garbage and has not been updated over the last 3-4 years.

You are welcome, I struggled with my Asus too, so it is not just Acer, but Asus' programs are much better written than Acer's, not Asus BIOS that is a black box from American Megatrends International, LLC. In your case they may have opened the panel to look at the back of the screen (electronics) and misaligned the Hall sensor magnet in the bezel (very common issue). My Asus OLED was probably returned to the shop and sold as "new" as the drive was encrypted and the warranty had a 6-month-old starting date (that I was able to update). I like Asus' keyboard/touchpads and the OLED screen, I also have 2 recent Acer laptops (SFX14-51G and PHN-16-71) both much faster than my Asus K3502ZA. BTW Windows11 23H2 and later have code in the registry that stops laptops from accidently waking from suspended mode to avoid what you described when transporting the laptop in a backpack. I disabled the key without any results. You may want to check that. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v EnableInputSuppression (https://www.elevenforum.com/t/laptop-asus-not-waking-from-sleep.10645/page-3#post-328641) 0x1 = enabled (default), 0x0 = disabled. Zandparts is selling these Hall sensor boards for older Acer laptops I noticed.

Thank you very much again for your answer, however that specific Registry path you suggested is not available non my machine. I can't find a "v" folder after "Power".

I will try to find a paperclip today and will check whether the magnet has been compromised or not.
