My laptop just returned from repair and Windows reset without keeping settings etc. I'm trying to set up the Sign in Options but each of the Halo features shows "This option is currently available."

I have tried to download the fingerprint driver but can't identify it in Device Manager which doesn't show a Biometrics Devices section. I have also followed the previous advice on this forum to confirm the Credential Manager Properties but still not working.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you can't sign in using fingerprint recognition, sign in with a PIN or password instead, and then re-register your fingerprints. Tips: Ensure your device's fingerprint reader is clean and dry. If needed, re-register your fingerprints, making sure to capture different angles of your finger.

Just for completeness, my laptop was new from last May and I had no problems with a PIN or fingerprint. However the laptop crashed on Christmas Day and I had to return it to the store I purchased it from for repairs. It was returned after a week with Windows 11 reinstalled as though it was a new machine. I have been gradually adding programs and features but leaving the Sign-In Options but no success in finding what the fix to what seens to be a common Acer Problem.

None of the Hello Sign-In Options work. Face, Pin and fingerprint all say "This option is currently available." From Googling it says they all come under Biometric Services in Device Manager. However, that section is not shown. I have followed steps to enable this and although I did this through Task Manager and left it Running, after restarting my laptop there is still no Biometrics Service in Device Manager and Task Manager shows the process as stopped. It still not appear in Device Manager after setting it running again in Task Manager.

However, there are a group of entries shown under Other Devices with no drivers and some unknown as shown in enclosed screenprint.

I can't even identify whether a fingerprint reader is included here or somewhere else to identify if there is a driver to be downloaded from Acer.

Situations like this is why we suggest letting Acer fix it under warranty instead of relying on a vendor. They screwed up and installed vanilla version of Windows 11, instead of the Acer specific build for your model. Often you can right click on each of those unknown devices and select update driver or install driver to have Windows find the proper drivers, but sometimes that doesn't work. There were two different fingerprint readers used in the SFG14-71T designs, so we need to find out which yours is before installing the appropriate driver for it. You either have a Carewe or EGISTEC fingerprint reader. Looking at the Hardware IDs under Details in the properties for the unknown device will give the manufacturer ID, and one of those will match up, telling you which driver needs to be installed.

I'm surprised with your comments. The vendor wasn't a small outfit. It is a national chain with their own specialist repair shops. I also have an extended warranty with them one of which main features is that if a repair takes longerthan 7 days they will replace with new laptop.

For my education how do you identify the Vanilla Version of Windows?

I will now see which of the devices listed is a Carewe or EGISTEC fingerprint reader.

How do I find a fix for the PIN not being available.

This is what is shown for each of the Unknown Devices. There is no mention of a manufacturer in the driver details.

However with the PCI Device although it has the same wording as the others in Driver Properties if you go to Update Driver and search for drivers on this computer for drivers it comes up with this:

So where does this leave me?

If it is due to the wrong Windows installation is it possible to install the Acer specific build for my laptop?

Last night I used CCleaner's Driver Updater which identified 17 missing or outdated driver issues. I authorised them all and they were all updated successfully. I then checked Device Manager where the Other Devices category had disappeared but a Biometric Devices one had been created with an EGISTIC Touchpad listed. I created a password on My Local Account and the Hello PIN and Hello Fingerprint were now available to set up, which I have.

Yes, in the device properties above, you have to go to the Details tab, then select the Hardware ID line to get the manufacturer ID that you can then look up. It sound like you now know which one is installed in your machine, so you should be good to go.

Often those big chain stores hire inexpensive techs to do their support, since they are less costly than experienced people. For almost all cases the issues are easily solved, so more in depth knowledge isn't needed. In your case the tech obviously didn't know how to find drivers to match the hardware, much less the procedure to use to get a factory reset, which would have used the original drivers. Not surprising since each manufacturer would have a different procedure to follow.
