Storage upgrade options for PO5-640 (Predator Orion 5000 Desktop)

Hi all,

I'm looking into storage upgrade options for my PC, and just wanted to make sure I had all the options before purchasing anything. I've already used up the extra m.2 slot on the mobo with a 2tb nvme drive. I'm considering replacing the boot 1tb drive with a 4tb ssd as option 1.. I'm a little hesitant to do this because i've heard cloning can slow down your system. Option 2 would involve utilizing the SATA ports - but i'd want to get SSD which wouldn't fit in the 3.5" trays… I assume you can get brackets for this?

And then option 3 i'm considering is replacing the m.2 wifi slot - is this compatible?

Thanks,

Hi @ShureThing my personal opinion and experience is not to use a large disk larger than 1TB as a boot and system disk, a 1TB SSD is more than enough and improves performance.

If what you need is storage space, it is better to use external drives, either USB or NAS type with ethernet port and if possible, in duplicate to increase data security, keep in mind that storing on a single disk, whether internal or external, has the risk of losing all data if the disk breaks.

As for cloning, I totally advise against it, it is not optimal since it drags all the problems of the system, it should only be used in business environments in cases of disk change in which, in addition to the system, many applications are installed for the development of work in the company and their installation and configuration would take many hours in which the work would be interrupted.

Whenever possible, perform new (clean) installations.

    Greetings.

I have two 2TB SSDs in the M.2 slots, both gen 4 and mirrored with software RAID1 for best redundancy. I have two 8TB HDDs in SATA slots, also mirrored in RAID1. I'm doing the RAID handling using IRST, though I would get better performance using a dedicated RAID card, but that would use up my second x16 slot. The HDDs are for slow storage, so nothing I typically need in real time, and 2TB is a great size for the system drive.
