Problem detecting Crucial MX500 SSD in Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with detecting my Crucial MX500 SSD (SATA 2.5") in my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 laptop. The SSD is visible in the BIOS, but it is sometimes not detected in Windows after booting up the laptop.

After conducting several tests, I noticed that the issue mainly occurs when an HDMI cable is connected to the laptop. When I disconnect the HDMI cable, the SSD is always properly detected during startup.

What I have done so far:

1. Updated the BIOS to the latest version.

2. All drivers (chipset, SATA) are up to date.

3. The Crucial MX500 firmware is updated to the latest version.

4. Tested other drives:

A 1TB 2.5" HDD worked without any issues.

A Crucial BX500 SSD had the same issue as the MX500.

Could the HDMI port and SATA interface share the same power line in this laptop model? If so, could this cause the SSD detection problem?

That should not be happening especially after you have done all the updates that should get a drive operational, but be aware that the Crucial MX range of SSD drives have had some compatibility issues with some laptops and desktops and your Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 might be one of those. Contact Crucial and get a solution from them or return the drive and get a Samsung 870 EVO SATA 3 SSD as they are the best 2.5” SSD drives around, they are a bit more expensive but that is the only 2.5" SSD drive that I would use and recommend.

I’ve been using Samsung 2.5" SSDs for many years and I can vouch for them being reliable, quick and also Samsung has their own great software called Magician that has a cloning part called “Data Migration” and all the performance and firmware tools to keep the drive supported fully and operating at its peak performance and its just a very well designed and supported hard drive and is compatible with all laptops and desktops. Thank you for your advice. I will indeed have to consider switching to a Samsung SSD. Previously, I had a Crucial BX500—tempted by the price and positive reviews—but it caused the same issue. I ended up giving it to a family member, and it works flawlessly in a desktop PC.

As an alternative, I tried using a traditional HDD, which worked fine in terms of compatibility, but copying data to it was a nightmare due to its slow speed. Then, I decided to go for the MX500 series, hoping that this time everything would work as expected, but unfortunately, I faced the same issue again.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will start looking for a Samsung SSD. Should I focus on a specific model or type of memory? I often read mixed opinions about SSDs that use different types of memory, like QLC or TLC, with concerns about their durability and performance. Would you recommend the Samsung 870 EVO (TLC) over the QVO (QLC) for better reliability and everyday use?

Use the Samsun EVO 870 SATA 3, that is a read 560MB/s and write at 549MB/s which is excellent for a SATA 3 drive, btw I’ve been using this same model 8xx drives for 7 years as I’ve got a Samsung 850 EVO SSD and its still working 100% and perfectly in my 2012 Aspire V3-571G laptop, that is why I can recommend this drive with their excellent Magician software that has the cloning software attached called Data Migration.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will definitely have to consider purchasing the Samsung EVO 870. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, although I’ve noticed a few comments from users mentioning that the drive just "die".

In any case, I will also reach out to Crucial support to see how they respond to my issue, as I’m curious about their perspective and possible solutions.
