Can I remove Intel IRST card and Install NVMe boot drive on Acer Aspire TC-875?

I have an Acer Aspire TC-875-ur11 and was wondering if the M.2Slot with the Intel IRS Card could be removed and a 1-TB NVMe gen 3 or 4 beinstalled? In which would be my boot drive. I have no idea if that IRST is goodfor anything short of setting up a raid drive array in which I don't need ifthat is the case. I would assume I would need to remove the IRSTsoftware/Driver Prior to; if I clone my old drive now onto the New NVMe in anexternal case first before installing and removing the 1-TB Mechanical HD. Somy question is can this be done and if so is my perceived procedure correct andis a M.2 NVMe gen 3 or 4 2280 the correct drive for that slot, and also do Ineed to change anything in the BIOS after the fact or will it just find thecloned card and boot automatically?

ThankYou a Head of time for any replies~

  • Hello! I think I understand your question. What you are asking is whether you can disconnect the optane memory from the system, correct? In this case, if I am correct, you must first disable the optane memory on the intel rapid storage:

Then, just turn off the computer and disconnect the optane memory from the system! You can indeed install a new nvme ssd on this computer.

Will an M.2 nvme 3x4 2280 SSD work in the unit, whereas I see several on Amazon that are gen 4 only and I’m assuming a 3x4 works on a gen 3 or 4 m.2 slot or I should say compatibility for a gen 3 or gen 4 system?

All M.2 SSD PCIe drives are backward compatible which means you can put a Gen 4 x4 lane drive into a Gen 3 x4 or x2 lanes slot and they will work 100% but will only work at the specified speed of the Gen 3 x4 or x2 read/write speeds.

The Aspire TC-875 desktop has a gen 3 PCIe 3 x4 lane speed slot and the quickest and best software supported M.2 SSD drive (which I’m using also and I know that its a good and quick drive) and that I recommend for your desktop is the Samsung 970 EVO Plus type M.2 drive, but if you put a gen 4 x4 lane drive that has a max speeds starting from 4000MB/s will work at the Gen 3 x4 lane speed that your TC-875 has which is max 3800MB/s read or 3500MB/s write. Good luck and hope this helps you out further.

We have heard reports from some users that say some of the newer gen 4 drives are actually cheaper then the older gen 3s, so go with the one that gives you the best cost/size ratio.
