Why do Acer Swift displays suddenly go dark on start-up?

A common problem seems to be that after functioning normally for a long period, Acer laptops start up but refuse to display anything except a black screen. Among the many causes and cures listed, the reason may be simple if you may have used the laptop to connect to an external screen (TV of projector).

The problem may be due to the fact that you used a second display monitor via the HDMI interface. In that case, always make sure that before disconnecting the second monitor (unplugging the cable), you choose "Use PC screen only" in the display selection option of the laptop under F5. Otherwise, if you restart the computer without the second display, its original single display will remain dark.

Sounds simple, but can be a darn problem!

Also, it is probably wise on the windows settings to deselect the options "remember windows location based on monitor connections" and "minimize windows when monitor is disconnected".

I wouldn't call that a common problem, very, very few laptops end up with a blank screen when you turn them on.

Regarding your statement: what does it mean? What is "very very few"? If my case were the only one that ever happened, how come there is so much on the web about blank screens for Acer laptops?

The point is not that there are many instances where it doesn't happen. It's like an airplane accident: it should never happen; and since that is not possible, we should aim for the next best, which is that the probability of occurrence is say less than 10 exponent -4 or -5 or -6. And based on evidence of the number of times this issue is discussed, I conclude that this threshold is probably breached.

By the way, another key aspect is to make sure you never shut down your Acer with some Windows programmes still open. That also seems to be part of the problem. Otherwise start-up will also be impaired. The error messages that can be gleaned from the resources monitor indicate that some windows drivers relating to the monitors and pointing devices cannot then be loaded.

I've been here in this forum for over ten years now and though we do see people with that issue on occasion, it's not all that often, hence the very, very few statement. Usually we can figure out the root cause, but not always. Sometimes it's something the user has done, such as attempted a rollback of the BIOS version, sometimes it's something wrong with the laptop itself, like a broken eDP cable or failed motherboard. There doesn't seem to be any specific thing that affects individual models or one specific brand.
