Aspire A15-41M-R8Y2 screen is horrible. Can I swap it out?

The problem is the screen (15.7" 30 pin) is washed out. Black is like a sheer fabric with a light behind it, not even black imo. Colors are washed out, and it all gets worse unless the viewing angle is perfect. I have brightness at 30% to minimize the issue, and gamma is all the way down, but this is so bad I can't take it anymore. Attached pix of this next to my old laptop tell the story, which also shows how the upper left & lower right get worse when the screen is not perfectly facing you.

The Acer website says "ComfyView (Matte); Twisted nematic (TN)" The ComfyView I have on another so it's the problem. I'm guessing Twisted nematic is the problem?

I have two older (and cheaper) Aspire laptops and the screens are great, and identical. Black is nice and black, colors are great, viewing angle is basically irrelevant. So I'm using an old laptop while the new one collects dust. Maybe Acer should put that in their advertising; "Users prefer older/slower models because new screen tech is awful"

I figured the only option is buy a generic replacement screen online, but like here, this model doesn't seem to exist. So before I break anything, I was curious how interchangeable Acer screens are. So what replacement screens for other models would work?

Hi,

Yes, it could be done because one retailer selling replacement panels for this model, go to Device manager, expand Monitors, right click Intergrated Monitor and select Properties, move to Detail tab, select Hardware IDs and post the picture like mine, showing the monitor Value number.

Hi, Laptopmedia review states: "The base display model is a TN unit. Our recommendation is to avoid this screen". So, you should get a "Full HD IPS panel, model number Innolux N156HCA-EAB (CMN1561). It comes with a 60Hz refresh rate. Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.6 cm), and the resolution – 1920 x 1080p" (Laptopmedia). Best to download HWINFO.64 and open the Monitor page, write down your screen ID, brand and part number. Go to www.panelook.com and enter the HWINFO panel details in the Panelook database. You will get all the compatible screens with all possible options, select the Innolux IPS screen (with 30-pin plug) mentioned above by Laptopmedia, matte or semi-glossy (I prefer matte). Contact details of vendors and availability for the selected panel will be listed.

That was super helpful! Thank you both for your quick and valuable replies.

Armed with the info from laptopscreen.com, specifically the location of the plug and overall dimensions, I decided to tear apart this laptop, and the other I showed in the picture I posted, and swap monitors. Each fit and worked perfectly in the other. Now I can buy a replacement screen, then unceremoniously, but with vengeance, destroy the TN screen.

I will still wonder of Acer; Why? I picture a bunch of engineers and management looking at the new TN monitor and thinking; this screen sucks, lets use it!
