Aspire 3 A315-59-575V with no wi-fi adapter. Before I return the computer, what else could I try?

I have a brand new Aspire 3 A315-59-575V which I have started to set up and use.

This afternoon I was not able to connect to secure sites without a VPN, then the wi-fi disappeared altogether. Troubleshooting just said no ethernet cable - there isn't even a socket! - and resetting network devices and restarting has not worked.

There's no sign of a wi-fi adapter on Device Manager and the network settings state that there isn't one installed.

Before I return the computer, what else could I try?

Reinstalling gets as far as "Let's connect you to a network" then stops, because there is no network connector. I think that I have answered my own question!

*Update* The wi-fi adapter was showing when I viewed hidden devices, but it was described as not connected. So it's either disconnected itself or has stopped working. Trying to update the driver did not work and restarting didn't work either. I'd usually uninstall it and restart, but if it is disconnected it won't be found upon restart, will it?

I'm currently resinstalling windows to factory setting to see if that works.
