Aspire 5 Model N20C6 Sound and Mic not working

The settings are all correct on Windows and Skype, but no-one can hear me and I can't hear them, although I can see a transcript of what they are saying on Skype. It has been suggested to re-install Windows but I am reluctant to do that as I'm told it will take some software off, there must be an easier option. Can anyone help me on this please?

1.Right click on the speaker icon tray.

    2.Click open sound settings.

    3. Click manage sound settings. Click microphone array. Click disable. Wait for a minute. Then enable it again.

4.Then restart the laptop and check.

Click on 'Yes' if the comment answers your question!

What do you mean by the 'speaker icon tray' please? Where do I find it?

Update:- I think I've found it, I clicked 'Don't Allow', assumed same as disable. I'll allow it again in a couple of minutes and see what happens. Thank you for your help.

I'm afraid that didn't work. Thank you anyway, anything is worth a try.
