Gateway Essential (model 433c) keeps locking up

I recently got a Gateway Essential that's running Windows 98 SE, and it keeps locking up, like the HDD activity light stays solid and nothing responds.

It boots fine into safe mode, but trying to boot it into normal mode results in it completely locking up.

I really only noticed these problems after I replaced the CMOS battery.

Boot to the BIOS and do a reset to factory defaults, then save and exit. Who knows what settings are there right now after the CMOS battery went dead. If you are trying to actually use the machine, rather than putting it in a museum 😉 you likely want to replace the HDD with a small SSD and an adapter bracket. The SSD will boot and run much faster than the (likely failing) HDD does.

@billsey how do I restore the BIOS to factory defaults?

Typically it's an F9 from within the BIOS, followed by an F10 to save and exit.
