I tried to update some of my drivers. When I restarted my laptop, it got past the Acer screen, made the noise like it was starting, but then the screen went blank.

I’ve tried starting the laptop in safe mode to roll back the drivers, but can’t see that option on the troubleshooting page.

Hi @kahare you could try to load a restore point prior to installing those drivers, but it is necessary to access Windows, use the startup repair option in case it allows you to access it again:

Hi, the startup repair says it couldn’t repair my PC, and the system restore gives me this screen…

When I restart it, it doesn’t give me an option to select an operating system (I only have Windows 11) and doesn’t let me select System Restore. It just seems to start normally and then the blank screen

What are the drivers you installed that caused the problem?

I don’t know. I used some software to check my drivers and it suggested about 8 updates, which I downloaded, then reset the laptop to instal them.

Create a USB from the Microsoft download page with the tool they provide and start an installation, follow the steps and on the first reboot you do the installation, remove the USB and check if you can access Windows.
If this doesn't solve it, do a full installation with USB.

    All the best.

Thank you! Downloading it now. Will I have to do anything to make my laptop boot from the usb?

Yes, press F12 repeatedly to get the boot menu and select USB.
You can also insert the USB with the computer turned off and turn it on, if the USB is created correctly, it will boot from the USB.

    Greetings.

If an Acer Aspire 5 laptop makes a starting noise but the screen remains blank, it likely indicates a display or graphics issue. Try resetting the display driver using Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. If that doesn't work, check if the laptop is outputting to an external monitor, which can help isolate the problem. Other troubleshooting steps include resetting BIOS settings, checking RAM, and testing with an external monitor.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of potential causes and solutions:
    1. Display Driver Issue:
Problem: A faulty or outdated graphics driver can cause a black screen.
Solution: Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the display driver. You should hear a beep, and the screen may come back.
    2. External Monitor Test:
Problem: The laptop's screen might be the source of the issue.
Solution: Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI cable. If the external monitor works, the problem is likely with the laptop's screen or its connection.
    3. BIOS Reset:
Problem: Incorrect BIOS settings can sometimes cause display issues.
Solution: Access the BIOS settings (usually by pressing F2 during startup) and reset them to default.
    4. RAM Issues:
Problem: Loose or faulty RAM modules can prevent the display from working.
Solution: Open the laptop and reseat the RAM modules to ensure they are properly connected.

    5. Power Reset:- A power surge or other power-related issue might be interfering with the display.
    Solution:
Disconnect the laptop from the power adapter and any peripherals. Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power, then plug the power adapter back in and try turning on the laptop.
    6. Safe Mode:
Problem: A software conflict or driver issue might be causing the black screen.
Solution: Boot into Safe Mode (usually by pressing F8 or Shift + F8 during startup) to see if the display works in Safe Mode.
    7. BIOS Recovery:
Problem: If all else fails, a BIOS recovery might be necessary.
Solution: Some Acer laptops have a BIOS recovery function. Consult the laptop's manual for specific instructions on how to perform a BIOS recovery.
