Why does the input from the headphones say it is not plugged in?

I just received my new pc and headphones a couple of days ago. I tried to use the headphones and while the output works fine, the input says it is not plugged in and I have no idea how to fix that. I would appreciate any help you can give.

When you first plugged the headset in the system was supposed to ask you what it was. If you answered headphones instead of headset it will have disabled the microphone. You can usually use the Realtek audio console to remove the headphones, then plug them back in and answer headset and the mic will be re-enabled.
