laptop not recognizing ethernet

Moved RJ45 from desktop to laptop and ethernet not recognized. Tried all ports on modem to same result - when connected to desktop had ethernet on all and when move cable from desktop to laptop zip. The laptop was connected to power and the ethernet cable was firmly clicked into place. [Took a while to work that out as laptop port smaller than cable - if encounter same google 'ethernet cable bigger than laptop port' and spare yourself reviewing cable sized and looking for adaptors as many of us have done)

Set Ethernet to have priority over Wi-Fi when both are connected in Windows 11. Here’s how you can do it:
Press Win + R and enter the ncpa.cpl command to open your network connections.
Select the network adapter whose priority you want to change, and open its properties.
Find Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) in the list of components and double-click on it to open its properties.
In the protocol properties window, click Advanced.
Uncheck the Automatic metric box then in the Interface metric box, enter 1 or the level of priority you wish to set it to.
Click on Apply, then OK to save the changes.
    Restart your computer.
Please note that lower Interface Metric numbers are prioritized over larger numbers. So, setting the Interface Metric for Ethernet to a lower number than Wi-Fi will give Ethernet priority when both are connected. Let me know if you need help with anything else! 😊

Also you should go to Device Manager and check the drivers for your Network devices.

Right click the start Menu and Click Device manager.

Click the hardware refresh button at the top right of the device manager pane.

scroll down to network double click and then click update driver.

Thank you both for help and providing it so quickly! Not sure either will work as I'm in set up but will try Win R when can face it again - spent hours researching cables and adaptors b4 then looking up cable specs used by NBN (Aus fibre provider) to make sure I they really did use RJ45s before occured to search 'ethernet plug too big for laptop' lol followed by plugging cables in and out of desktop using all modem ports - and I NEED some tech hassle free time :). It wouldn't surprise me if it was wikfi configured given they slam us with wifi channels. I will let you know the result once I've tried it.

ACER: Please provide info on using laptop ethernet ports in the box. Tons of us have this issue and many of them are way more tech savvy than me.

Please allow us to progress some way into set up without needing to connect to the net - or ideally imo let us choose when we want to connect as I greatly would have preferred to spend time familarizing myself with Win 11 b4 dl Win updates or do anything else on the web. And ask us if we want to connect via ethernet or wiki instead of land us with wifi channels. Thanks for consider these suggestions.

Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into the Ethernet port on both your router and Windows 10 PC. On your router, make sure the Ethernet cable is plugged into the correct Ethernet port—not the Internet port that's used to connect your modem and router.
