Depends on your Nitro 5 model and how old it is, if its the battery that is the fault, if your Nitro 5 was mainly plugged into the mains power, the battery should not be a factor at all, as the battery could last even 8 years if you use it like a desktop, as your laptop should charge 100% , the charger adapter either chargers or it doesn't and if you have a barrel DC_IN port fault the laptop wont charge at all or if you have a short at the barrel plug, the adapter turns off as its got a safety fuse inside and it will not deliver power to a shorted port laptop.

The main culprit of this problem could be from the laptops main charging power rail, have it checked out by a technician as these faulty can progress to more serious faults that can burn out mosats that protect the cpu and gpu and then you will need a new mainboard, so be very careful. Good luck.

That depends on when you last replaced your battery, if 4-years old it may be a dead cell or bad Smart chip, replacing the battery would fix that, the power adapter may not be powerful enough to start charging of a depleted battery, make sure your battery is always fully charged and leave the adapter plugged in 24/7, this will not affect the battery wear at all. Disable hibernate and Fast Startup is recommended by Microsoft. Resetting the advanced Power Plan settings to factory Defaults may help. Check the DC barrel port on the laptop if you see indications of burning because of a worn-out adapter plug or an incompatible plug size. Reset BIOS to factory defaults and update BIOS and Windows.

IMO, no malware can do this but not fully updating drivers and OS will. Consider getting a larger 280-Watt power adapter but make sure the barrel pin of the DC plug has the correct diameter and length for you DC charging port.
