I have an Aspire 5 l, i-5. The motherboard takes Gen 3 NVME drives.

QUESTION:

Anyone use a Gen 4 NVME drive on a Gen 3 systemboard?

(I know Gen 4 drives are backward compatible)

How does it work for you?

What PC (system) do you use it in?

What has your experience been (in this situation?)

Thanks ahead of time.

Cheers!

You need to tell us the complete model name like Aspire 5 a515-56T and the year (2018?). is the CPU i5-8250U?

An NVMe M.2 Gen 4 will run at half speed in a Gen 3x4 slot, and much lower in a Gen 3x3/2 almost like a M.2 Sata-3 SSD.

The laptop was purchased in March of 2023.

    The Model is A515-56-53DS. (11th Gen i-5 ?)

I am pretty sure the motherboard uses Gen 3x4 NVME drives.

I realize that the drive is limited by the bus speed. (To the CPU)

A Gen 4 Drive will have a better controller, DRam, and TLC chips, (vice an older variation.) But none of that comes into play, is that what I hear you saying?

Before you ask, "why would I put a Gen 4 Drive on a Gen 3 laptop?" Let me tell you. . . I have a Gen 4 Drive IN HAND. The only Gen 3 Drive I have IS the one that came in the laptop.

    Thus my (several) questions.

    Cheers!
