I have just recently had to replace the motherboard on my Acer Spin. The board I bought was used. The OS on the SSD is corrupted. Defender stops working requiring a restart that repeats on every boot. The firewall is damaged too. I can't reset the OS. The option to reset the computer is missing from the menu completely. Trying to reset when booted states that the partition/files are missing. I can't update as the database is corrupted and updates fail. I can't upgrade to Windows 11 as the version of Win 10 s not 1804 (might be wrong on that number but mine is 17 something). I don't have a USB flash drive right now but I do have a 128gb SDXC micro SD Card.

Can I install windows 10 or 11 to the micro SDXC and boot to it? I know I will have to go into the BIOS and create a Supervisor password so that I can turn off the secure boot feature so that I can boot from another drive but before I go through the steps of transfering the windows(x).iso and a program like power ISO onto the SDXC card then transfer that to the Spin and then create the bootable media I would like to know if I am wasting my time or not. Also as I have never created an SD or SDXC micro SD card to be bootable before via an SD card reader built into the computer before will I need a specific program to acheive this? I have used a USB card reader and created a bootable SD that way before. But unless I kept the SD card in the USB card reader I haven't gotten it to boot via the onboard SD card readers before on other systems. However as the Spin is more akin to a tablet in nature I am hoping that it will boot to the micro SD card reader ok.

Well I tried to create the micro SDXC disk to be bootable but alas it would not be recognized by the BIOS. I used Power ISO first but it only created an MBR drive. So I used Rufus and burnt it GPT and it still didn't work. I also had problems trying to run the exe on the media too. It couldn't create the neccessary installation folder and said I had to modify boot.wim and set flag 9 or some such. I lost my USB flash drive so can't create a bootable USB. I can buy one next week though. Anyway, I am now in the process of upgrading win 10 64bit 1709 (?) to 1803 (?) so that I can do an upgrade to windows 11 64bit from windows 10. It is downloading now. Hopefully this will by default create the required reset partiton I need and all things will be right with the world again. The Spin motherboard I bought is corrupted badly. Defender keeps stopping. The firewall is all messed up too. Run as admin mode doesn't need to be manually allowed upon request. There are a bunch of bat files that are pinging various ip addresses and set to update certain files and folders if needed. One address is to an FTP site called sam online which has movies on it and is located in Bangladesh. They have sketchy names too like killie.bat and such. Very dodgy and I'm definitely not logging into any online account for any website. That defender is broken and the firewall and certain updates look like they install but don't etc… I am going to install windows 11 via a USB drive next week if I can't reset the system to factory default after the upgrade to 1803 and then windows 11. I trust the board as far as I could throw a dead elephant with one arm tied behind my back. If I wasn't technically inclined and a basic user that had no idea about such things and I used it to do banking and social media I would be shocked if I wasn't hammered by the guy who set the thing up and lines of credit weren't applied for at multiple banks and institutions. I have half a mind to upload all the files and setup to bleepingcomputer and let a real pro go through it and harrass the ***** for what he/she/they tried to do.

Microsoft doesn't allow booting from an SD card, though you can boot from a USB flash drive. What drive size and type is on the used motherboard? I believe those low end Spins came with a fairly small eMMC drive soldered to the motherboard, and that is often the first point of failure on them. eMMC drives just don't last as long as traditional drives, which is part of the reason they are so cheap. Some of them did have the provision for adding a 2.5" drive though, so if the eMMC is wonky you could drop a SSD in on the SATA port and boot from that.

That leftmost red circle with the blue inside it is where the SATA connector is, if your motherboard is equipped to support one.
