I can't pull the cable out of the battery

No matter how hard I try, I can't get this cable out, it won't give way, and I don't want to pull with all my might so as not to break something. I want to pull it out to change the thermal paste. What should I do? Should I try to replace the thermal paste without removing it?

It's not a latched connector, so it should just pull out. You can try a flat blade screwdriver to gradually wiggle it out by prying on the lugs at the sides of the connector. You definitely want to disconnect the battery before getting deeper into the motherboard work, though you don't have to physically remove the motherboard for a repaste job.
