I recently got a used, non working at the time spin. I took out the battery and held down power and the laptop turned on. I reconnected the battery and the laptop would stay on for about a minute with the charging light lit up then the laptop would turn off and not turn on again until I had both unhooked the battery and held down power button for 20 secs and also had unplugged the charger too before it would turn on again. Without the battery connected it will stay on indefinitely. Connect the battery and it powers off after couple of mins and the aformentioned proccess has to be done before it powers up again. So I bought another OEM battery from Best Buy which came today. It had 75% charge on it and the laptop works fine.

However if I connect the charger the chargers internal breaker trips and the battery does not charge. I can get the charging light to light up for 1 second before the breaker trips again. The laptop had suffered some moisture damage which is why it came to me non working. What could the problem be? I haven't yet taken off the copper heat sink sheet from the motherboard to see what it looks like underneath. The rest of the board looks fine. The moisture sticker has turned red though. Does it look like I need to change the motherboard on the laptop? I'm guessing it will. But maybe there is a fault protector circuit I can manually reset to stop the charger from shutting down if there is a battery connected to the system.

Bring it to a reputable PC repair shop to check the motherboard, if estimated repair costs are high consider buying a new laptop instead,

The symptoms you described suggest there might be an issue with the charging circuit or the power delivery system on the motherboard. The moisture damage could have caused corrosion or a short circuit, affecting the proper functioning of the charging system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Inspect for Visible Damage:
      • Carefully inspect the motherboard, especially around the area where the charging port is located. Look for any signs of corrosion, burnt components, or damaged traces. Pay close attention to the area around the moisture damage sticker.
    2. Check Charger and Charging Port:
      • Ensure that the charger and charging port are in good condition. Try using a different charger and cable to see if the issue persists.
    3. Inspect the Battery Connector:
      • Check the battery connector on the motherboard for any visible damage. Ensure that it is clean and securely connected.
    4. Reset the BIOS/UEFI:
      • Sometimes, a reset of the BIOS/UEFI settings can resolve power-related issues. You can try accessing the BIOS/UEFI settings and loading the default or optimized settings.
    5. Perform a Power Drain:
      • Disconnect the charger and the battery.
      • Hold down the power button for about 20 seconds to drain any residual power.
      • Reconnect the battery and charger and try turning on the laptop.
    6. Check Charging IC and Components:
      • If comfortable and skilled with electronics, consider inspecting the charging IC (Integrated Circuit) and surrounding components. Look for any visible damage or signs of malfunction.
    7. Check Thermal Issues:
      • Verify that the cooling system (heat sink and fan) is functioning properly. Overheating can sometimes trigger protective mechanisms that shut down charging.
    8. Moisture Damage Assessment:
      • Carefully remove the copper heat sink sheet to assess the extent of moisture damage. Clean the affected areas with isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush if needed. Check for any signs of corrosion or damage.
    9. Professional Assessment:
      • If the issue persists after the above steps, and especially if you're not comfortable with in-depth motherboard diagnostics and repairs, consider seeking professional assistance. A repair technician may be able to identify and fix the specific issue.

If the laptop has suffered significant moisture damage, there's a possibility that the damage might be beyond DIY repair. In such cases, professional help is advisable. Keep in mind that replacing the motherboard is a complex task and might not be cost-effective for older or lower-end laptops.

It's going to be tough to do any additional diagnosis without knowing just which Spin model it is. There have been a lot of them over the years. Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like SPxxx-xxx-xxxx. Likely there is an issue with the charging circuit, but more suggestions will need the model to try and figure out.
