Aspire A515-58M changing playback options not working

Aspire A515-58M My internal speakers work OK. When I plug in an external speaker, I sometimes am asked what I have plugged in and can specify line-out, but other times I am not asked and I get no sound from my external system. Similarly, when I plug in a headset, sometimes I'm asked to confirm what type of device I have plugged in and sometimes I am not. It is frustrating to deal with inconsistent responses. Any ideas what I need to update? I went to Acer website for support, downloaded latest audio drivers but when I tried to install them, I was told more recent drivers already installed. currently have 6.0.9514.1 audio driver.
